STANDISH, ME - Doug
MacCallum '09 (Hingham, MA) scored with 24:29
remaining to lift Saint Joseph's (11-5-3, 6-2-1) past Johnson and
Wales University (5-14, 4-5) on Saturday afternoon at Westerlea Way
Field. With the victory, #3 St. Joe's advances to the GNAC
Semifinals and will play #2 seed Lasell College on Tuesday at 1:30
PM. The loss ends the 2008 season for the Wildcats.
The teams combined to steer just four shots on net, six overall, in
a stalemate first half, but the second stanza, particularly the
latter portion, was a nailbiter for both sides.
MacCallum once again ignited the SJC offensive
front, scoring his team-leading 12th marker of the season off a
setup by Paul Robins '11 (Cornwall, England) at the 65:31 mark. The
junior took a crossing pass from Robins and lofted
the ball over JWU keeper Joe Ferraro '11 (Freehold, NJ), who came
out of the net to challenge the play, from 23 yards out.
Five minutes after MacCallum scored the eventual
game-winner, Wildcats' senior forward Jeremiah Schenzel (Carson
City, NV) nearly knotted the contest with a nifty header attempt
that was snuffed by SJC keeper Will
Pike '10 (Gorham, ME) at the 69:38 mark.
Pike stopped Schenzel again nearly five minutes
later on a breakaway bid. The 6'7 senior was sprung loose on the
left side of the field and attempted to kick the ball to the right
corner, but the Pike was up to the task and dove
to the right to make an impressive save.
For the Wildcats, Ferraro made several impressive saves of his own
in the losing effort, including a stop with three minutes
remaining. Robins, streaking down the left side,
received a crossing pass from the right and was robbed by a diving
Ferraro on an attempt at the right corner.
Pike made four saves in the shutout bid, his seventh of the season.
Ferraro made one stop in net for the Wildcats.
The Monks held the 7-6 edge in shots and a 6-2 advantage in corner
kicks in the victory.
