Monks Tie Regionally Ranked Cadets, 1-1

NORTHFIELD, VT - Saint Joseph's College (2-3-2, 0-1-1 GNAC) played regionally ranked Norwich University (6-0-1, 1-0-1 GNAC) to a 1-1 double-overtime draw on Saturday afternoon. Monks junior goalkeeper Will Pike (Gorham, ME) made 12 saves in net to help secure the tie and junior Doug MacCallum (Hingham, MA) recorded his team-leading fourth goal of the season for the Royal Blue.

St. Joe's opened the scoring in the 11th minute when MacCallum netted a breakaway goal off a pass from sophomore Paul Robins (Cornwall, England) to provide the Royal Blue with an early 1-0 lead over Norwich, who was ranked as the fifth-best team in New England in the September 16th NSCAA/adidas Men's Soccer Regional Poll.

The Cadets, who outshot the Monks 36-7 in the contest and also held a 10-1 edge on corner kicks, were unable to solve Pike in net until the 86th minute when forward Ryan Boyton scored on a pass from teammate Rob Harlow to knot the match at one apiece and send the game to extra frames.

SJC junior Andre Cushing (Hampden, ME) managed to steer a shot on net at the 109:33 mark, but Norwich keeper Charles Maxwell made the save, his only stop of the match, to preserve the tie for the Cadets.

The SJC backline was stellar all game for head coach Joel Bancroft. Middle back Joe Happnie ‘11 (Rockland, MA) cleared two balls off the endline in overtime to help preserve the 1-1 deadlock for the Monks.

Pike has been solid in net so far this season for the Monks with 47 saves, a 1.21 goals against average, an .839 save percentage and a pair of shutouts in seven matches. The junior keeper has made 36 saves and allowed just three goals in his last 489 minutes of play.

The Monks will next take to the pitch on Wednesday, September 23rd at Maine-Farmington in a 4:00 PM match while Norwich is set to face off against Green Mountain College at 2:30 PM tomorrow in Poultney, VT.
