Monks Down Beavers, 2-0

FARMINGTON, ME - Saint Joseph's College (3-3-2, 0-1-1 GNAC) defeated host-team University of Maine at Farmington (2-3) 2-0 on Tuesday afternoon with a pair of second half goals from Paul Robins '11 (Cornwall, England) and Greg Cavanaugh '10 (Haverhill, MA). SJC junior goalkeeper Will Pike (Gorham, ME) made eight saves in the victory to record his third shutout of the season.

The victory marks the first-ever win for the men's soccer program over Maine-Farmington. Prior to Tuesday's match, the two teams met on the pitch 21 times, with the Beavers holding an 18-0-3 record versus the Monks.

After a scoreless first half, Cavanaugh deposited the game-winner at 58:32 when he booted in a Farmington clear attempt just inside the box. The goal was Cavanaugh's first collegiate marker.

Robins added an insurance goal in the 75th minute off a corner kick from Andre Cushing '10 (Hampden, ME) to cap the game scoring with the Monks on top, 2-0.

St. Joe's held a 7-2 edge in corner kicks and a 12-9 advantage in shots in the contest. Pike made in-traffic snares on both of the Beavers' corner kick bids.

SJC sophomore midfielder Richard Trombley (Ellsworth, ME) recorded two shots on net in the win.

Beavers goalkeeper Matthew Dennett (Augusta, ME) recorded four saves in goal including a diving stab on Michael Sanfilippo '12 (Walpole, MA) in the opening minute of the second half.

Saint Joseph's will host GNAC rival Suffolk University on Saturday, September 27th at 3:30 PM.
