2013 Men's Soccer Captains Announced

STANDISH, ME – Men's soccer Head Coach Steve Babineau has announced his team captains for the upcoming season.

Three seniors will serve as extensions of the Saint Joseph's coaching staff, including a pair of returning captains in defenders Dan McIntyre (Sparta, N.J.) and Joe Murphy (Poland, Maine). Forward Zach Johnson (Westbrook, Maine) has been selected as a captain for the first time and looks to lead, both on and off the pitch, along with his senior cohorts during the 2013 campaign.

All three players have earned All-Conference accolades during their career. Murphy, a 2012 Third Team All-GNAC choice, is one of the top backs in the Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) and, along with McIntyre - a 2011 All-GNAC selection, helps form one of the elite defensive duos in the conference.

Johnson, a two-time All-Conference honoree, has emerged as one of the top scorers in the GNAC. In 2011, he netted 17 goals and 38 total points en route to claiming First Team All-GNAC accolades. Last fall, Johnson tallied six goals, including five game-winners, and earned Second Team All-Conference mention for his efforts.

Under the watch of fourth-year Head Coach Steve Babineau, Saint Joseph's went 10-7-2 overall and 6-3-1 versus conference opponents last season en route to claiming the #3 seed in the GNAC Tournament. Sitting with a sub-.500 record in early October, the Monks managed to notch six consecutive victories heading into the postseason, but saw their hopes of a repeat-championship were dashed with a 3-0 loss at the hands of #6 Emerson College in a GNAC Tournament quarterfinal on October 27th.
