Grant PK Strike Lifts Monks Past Bengals in Spring Season Opener, 3-2

STANDISH, Maine – Senior Colin Grant (Harvard, Mass.) scored the game-winning goal on a PK attempt with 6:19 remaining in regulation to lift Saint Joseph's College past UMaine-Fort Kent, 3-2, in a spring men's soccer game at the SJC Athletics Complex on Sunday afternoon.

Senior Quinn Hewitt (Cape Elizabeth, Maine) opened the scoring with a strike off a perfect feed from junior Austin Ward (North Andover, Mass.) at the 37:32 mark but UMFK knotted the game at 1-1 just 42 seconds later.

Ward put the Monks on top with a shot taken from inside the box to the top left corner off a Grant feed with 13:30 left in the first half.

UMFK tied the game once again just 4:29 into the second stanza and, following nearly 40 minutes of midfield jockeying, Grant struck for the clincher on a penalty kick after the Bengals were flagged for a foul inside the box.

SJC senior keeper David Walbridge (Hampden, Mass.) made two saves in the first half while sophomore Michael Sheridan (Folsom, Pa.) posted one stop in the second frame.

The Monks return to action on Saturday with a home spring season game versus UMaine-Farmington. Kickoff is slated for 1:00 PM.
