NORTON, Mass. – Sophomore forward Alasdair Ferrier (Concord, N.H.) netted a pair of goals to lead the Wheaton College (Mass.) men's soccer team to a 4-1 victory over visiting Saint Joseph's College (Maine) this afternoon at Keefe Field on the Wheaton campus in Norton, Mass.
The Lyons improve to 4-1-1, while the Monks fall to 2-2. The meeting was the first between the schools since 2014.
Wheaton owned a 17-10 shot advantage, including 12-6 in a second half that saw the teams combine for four goals.
The Lyons got on the board less than three minutes into the match to take a 1-0 lead with just 2:58 gone. Junior forward Luke Strange (Portland, Ore.) unleashed a shot from outside of the box that hit the far left post, but Ferrier was there for the rebound and a shot into the right side of the back of the net.
Both teams were unable to score for the remainder of the session as Wheaton took a 1-0 edge into the intermission.
The Lyons' second goal came almost exactly 65 minutes after their initial marker to take a 2-0 lead in the 68th minute of play. Senior forward Luca De Castro Novaes (Scarsdale, N.Y.) increased the home team's margin when he fired a shot just inside the right post on a free kick from just outside of the top of the box for his first goal of the year.
Wheaton added another insurance goal less than three minutes later with Ferrier's second tally of the day and team-leading sixth of the season. Senior keeper Cam Millington (Fairfield, Conn.) sent a booming punt into Saint Joseph's defensive zone, where Ferrier picked it up and carried it into the box, before making a move on the Monks' keeper and then slipping a shot behind him and into the net in the 71st minute of action for a 3-0 lead.
Millington looked destined to pick up his first shutout of the year, but Saint Joseph's senior midfielder Alec Kosinski (East Lyme, Conn.) took advantage of a free kick for his first marker of the season to cut the deficit to 3-1. Kosinski lifted a shot from five yards beyond the 18-yard box and tucked it just inside the left post and out of the reach of a sprawled out Millington with 1:46 left to play in the match.
The Lyons picked up a late goal of their own just 30 seconds later when first year midfielder Joey Everett (Danbury, Conn.) sent a cross from the right side of the box to the right post, where junior midfielder Gavin Mahoney (Carlsbad, Calif.) netted his first collegiate goal on a one-timer with just 76 seconds remaining in the contest.
Millington stopped three shots for Wheaton, while senior goalie Mike Sheridan (Folsom, Pa.) made four saves for the Monks.
The Lyons return to action on Saturday, September 17 when they host Babson College to open the New England Women's & Men's Athletic Conference slate at 2:00 p.m. on Keefe Field, while Saint Joseph's travels to Boston, Mass. to take on Emmanuel College for a noon Great Northeast Athletic Conference match-up.
