Monks Roll Past Raiders, 3-0

STANDISH, Maine – Saint Joseph's College (11-3-1, 10-1-0 GNAC) blanked Rivier University (3-5-2, 1-5-1 GNAC), 3-0, in Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) men's soccer action at the SJC Athletics Complex on Wednesday evening.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

The Monks scored a pair of goals in the first half, as sophomore Rion Dos Santos (São Paulo, Brazil) netted his third tally of the season off a Michael Wildes (Winthrop, Maine) pass in the 18th minute and grad student Austin Ward (Exeter, N.H.) tacked on his team-leading 12th goal of the year on a penalty kick attempt 10 minutes later.

Freshman Hayes Sweeney (Hollis, Maine) capped the game scoring with his first NCAA goal at the 58:16 mark off nifty passes from junior Will Wood (Franklin, N.H.) and Ward.

TEAM STATS:

Saint Joseph's held the lead in shots (24-12), shots on goal (13-4), and corner kicks (8-2) in the victory.

THE KEEPERS:

Senior Mike Sheridan (Folsom, Pa.) made a pair of saves to record his fifth shutout of the season while Rivier junior Dominic Cunha (Peabody, Mass.) steered away 10 shots in the losing effort.

HISTORICALLY SPEAKING:

With the triumph Saint Joseph's improves to 14-2-1 all-time versus Rivier University and has now defeated the Raiders in 14-consecutive meetings dating back to the 2008 campaign.
