FORT MYERS, FL - St. Joe's is 1-1 after the first
day of their southern swing with a 13-5 loss to Clark University in
the team's first game and a 6-4 victory over Rockford College in
the second game of the day. SR Megan Farrell
(Abington, MA) and SO Liddy van der Linden
(Worcester, MA) both hit home runs in the loss to Clark. Both SO
Jillian Kimball (Albany TWP, ME) and JR
Alysn Ludwig (Waldoboro, ME) went 4-4 at the plate
and FY pitcher Kiera Walsh (Benton, ME) threw all
seven innings to earn her first collegiate win against
Rockford.
St. Joe's jumped out to a three run lead in the first inning
against Clark University after Farrell hit a three-run home run and
added another run in the 2nd inning off an RBI from Kimball to
stake a 4-0 lead over the Cougars. Clark rallied with a six runs
off of five hits in the bottom of the 2nd inning to take the 6-4
lead. Liddy van der Linden hit a solo home run to lead off the
third inning, but Clark scored 4 runs in the 4th and 3 in the sixth
inning to force the eight-run rule.
The St. Joe's offense managed to attain 11 hits in the contest but
stranded 10 runners in the defeat. van der Linden,
Farrell and FY Alyssa
Dunn (Standish, ME) each had two hits in the game.
SO Christy Wezowicz (Granville,
MA) pitched five innings and took the loss.
St. Joe's scored three runs in the first inning again in the second
game of the day against Rockford College as
Jillian Kimball and JR
Kim Bechard (Lewiston, ME)
registered RBI singles. Alysn
Ludwig sparked the offense with a leadoff single
in the opening inning.
Rockford managed to plate two runs, both unearned, in the fourth
inning off of SJC freshman pitcher Kiera
Walsh to make it a one-run game, 3-2. FY left
fielder Renee Leach (Shapleigh,
ME) threw out a Rockford runner at home plate to end the
inning.
Kimball, Farrell and
Dunn each notched RBI's in the 7th inning to pad
the SJC lead to 4 runs, 6-2. Rockford came back in the home half of
the final inning with 2 runs to make the final score 6-4, St.
Joe's.
Liddy van der Linden was 2-4 and
Alysn Ludwig added three stolen
bases to her 4-4 effort in the victory. Jillian
Kimball notched two RBI's in the game and starting pitcher
Kiera Walsh struck out six,
allowed no bases on balls and just two earned runs in the first
start of her career.
