St. Joe's Defeats the College of Saint Joseph (VT), 66-60
Women Improve Season Record to 4-1
STANDISH, ME - Saint Joseph's College played the
College of Saint Joseph (VT) in the opening game of the Merry Monk
Classic and came out with their 4th consecutive victory, winning
66-60. St. Joe's was led by SO Meghan
Daigle (Grantham, NH) who scored a game and season
high 17 points. St. Joe's improves to 4-1 on the year while the
Fighting Saints drop to 2-4.
Daigle started the offense for SJC early as she converted a 3 point
play on the team's first possession of the game. FY
Erin Cartwright (Acton, MA)
scored 6 points in the opening 4 minutes on her way to a career
high 11 points in the game. St. Joe's would lead CSJ 21-12 at the
midway point of the first half after SO Allison
Miner (Pembroke, NH) sank a free throw to
capitalize on a 3 point play.
Later in the half Fighting Saints guard Tahara Pleasure would make
a free throw to convert on a 3 point play of her own, cutting St.
Joe's lead to 21-18. On the next SJC possession, Meghan Daigle
would grab a steal and dish to SO Carolyn
Freeman (Scarborough, ME) who drained a much
needed three pointer to go up 24-18. CSJ would get within 2 points
of St. Joe's when Irene Tompkins nailed a jumper from the baseline
to make the score 28-26, SJC.
Meghan Daigle hit consecutive
baskets in the final two minutes, giving her 9 points in the half
and providing St. Joe's with a 6 point lead, 34-28, going into
halftime. Irene Tompkins led the Fighting Saints at the half with 9
points and 5 rebounds.
The Fighting Saints came out firing in the first eight minutes of
the second half, going on a 17-2 run and grabbing the lead 51-42
over St. Joe's. Irene Tompkins scored 7 points during this stretch
for CSJ on her way to a team 16 points.
Saint Joseph's College got the spark they needed when
Allison Miner intercepted a
Victoria Guetti pass that led to a basket from SR Marie
Lint (Orono, ME) and cut the deficit to 51-44, Fighting
Saints. The duo of Miner and Lint
would strike again as Miner grabbed a defensive
rebound to start a SJC play that would end with another
Lint basket and cutting the CSJ lead to 5 points.
These plays were the beginning of an 11-0 rally by St. Joe's, which
ended with a jumper from Erin
Cartwright on a Meghan
Daigle assist to put the team up 53-51 4:45 with
remaining on the clock.
Carolyn Freeman drained her third 3 pointer of the
game at the 3:54 mark to put Saint Joe's up 56-52. Meghan
Daigle scored on the next SJC possession with a graceful
360-degree spinning lay-up in the paint to put St. Joe's up by six,
a lead they would not surrender.
Four Saint Joseph's College players reached double digit point
figures in the game. SJC was led by Meghan Daigle
with 17 points, followed by Allison Miner (13),
Carolyn Freeman (12) and Erin
Cartwright (11). Marie Lint played well
off the bench for Coach Reardon, netting 6 points and grabbing 3
rebounds in nine minutes of play. JR Alysn Ludwig
(Waldoboro, ME) grabbed 4 steals for St. Joe's and dished out 5
assists in the game. SJC tallied 15 steals in the contest.
Three College of Saint Joseph players reached double digits in
points as Irene Tompkins (16), Michelle Thompson (14) and Erica
Raiche (11) accounted for 41 of the team's 60 points. Tompkins also
grabbed 11 rebounds to earn a double-double for the game. Victoria
Guetti also posted 11 boards for CSJ.
The Merry Monk Classic will continue on Saturday as the College of
Saint Joseph (VT) will face Maine-Presque Isle at 12:00 PM while
Saint Joseph's College is slated to face Green Mountain College
(VT) at 2:00 PM.
Green Mountain Wins Nightcap in Dramatic Fashion, 49-47
STANDISH, ME - The Green Mountain College (VT)
Eagles played the Maine-Presque Isle Owls in the second game of the
Merry Monk Classic, hosted by Saint Joseph's College of Maine, and
came out victorious, 49-47 on a jump shot by FY Millicent Hopper
with three seconds left in the game.
Erica Davis led the charge for the Owls with a double-double effort
(17 points, 11 rebounds). Ashley Booker shot 6-12 from the floor
and provided 16 points. Anna Lenentine grabbed a game-high 12
rebounds for UMPI in the losing bid.
The Eagles featured three players in double digits and were led by
Brittany Holden with 17 points. Holden went 3-4 from beyond the
3-point arc. Millicent Hopper continued to build on her solid
freshman campaign with her 13 points in the game. Emma Buckley
added 10 points in the winning effort.
The Merry Monk Classic continues on Saturday as UMPI (0-4) plays
the College of St. Joseph at 12:00 PM. Green Mountain (3-2) will
play host team Saint Joseph's College (4-1) at 2:00 PM.
