Mules Trounce Monks in Tourney Championship, 90-54

WATERVILLE, ME - Colby College (2-0) defeated Saint Joseph's (1-2), 90-54, in the Colby Invitational Championship on Saturday afternoon. Ashley Geel '12 (St. George, ME) led four Monks in double-digits with 11 points and grabbed a team-high 6 boards in the loss.

Carolyn Freeman '10 (Scarborough, ME/McAuley) netted 10 points and was named to the All-Tournament Team after the loss. Joining Freeman on the all-tourney squad were Colby's Jil Vaughan (Wareham, MA), who netted game-highs of 22 points and 8 rebounds in just 19 minutes off the bench, and Julianne Kowalski (Montville, NJ), who tallied 12 points and garnered Tournament Most Valuable Player honors.

The Mules had many fine offensive performances while shooting 54 percent (35-for-65) from the field and 62 percent (8-for-13) from 3-point range. Alison Cappelloni (Sudbury, Mass.) was 4-for-5 from 3-point range on the way to 17 points. Sophomore point guard Aarika Ritchie (Lee, Maine) added 10 points and dished eight assists, while Rachael Mack (Augusta, Maine) added 11 points on 5-for-7 shooting. Samantha Allen (Bridgton, Maine) had nine points and five rebounds and first-year guard Diana Manduca (Portland, Maine) added five rebounds and four assists.

For the Monks, Allie Parent '12 (Camden, ME) had 10 points and 7 assists, and Danyelle Shufelt '13 (Sutton, Vt.) registered 10 points. St. Joe's shot 41.5% (22-53) from the field, 35.3% (6-17) from three-point distance, and 66.7% (4-6) from the charity stripe in the loss.

Saint Joseph's tied the game at 10-10 with 14:11 left in the first half, but the Mules exploded on a 29-9 run over the next nine minutes to take a commanding 39-19 lead. Ritchie had six points and one assist over the final 4:21 to push the Colby lead to 53-26 at halftime.

Colby did not let up in the second half, using a 23-8 run over the opening 8:38 of play to take a 76-34 lead.

The Mules had 25 assists on their 35 made field goals and had a 41-25 advantage on the boards, as St. Joe's grabbed just 6 offensive boards. Colby scored 34 points off 25 SJC turnovers and netted 23 second-chance points in the victory.

Both teams return to action on Tuesday, as Saint Joseph's is set to host Gordon College and Colby will take on Maine-Farmington at home. Both games are slated to begin at 6:00 PM.
