Second Half Surge Pushes Eagles Past Monks, 92-67

BANGOR, ME - Husson University (2-5) toppled Saint Joseph's (5-4), 92-67, in non-league women's basketball action on Saturday afternoon. Megan McDevitt '12 (Cumberland, ME) paced the Monks with 17 points and Meghan Daigle '10 (Grantham, NH) added 15 points in the losing effort.

For Husson, Shelby Bradford '10 (Lee, ME) and Brianna Hanscom '12 (Mattawamkeag, ME) both posted double-double efforts. Bradford registered game-highs of 22 points and 14 boards and Hanscom added 14 points and 10 caroms in the victory.

The teams were evenly matched in the first half, as the opening stanza featured 10 lead changes and the Eagles carried a 35-30 advantage into intermission. The complexion of the game changed in the second half, however, as Husson opened the closing period with a 20-6 outburst to take an insurmountable 55-36 lead with 14:18 remaining.

After not recording a FT attempt in the first half, the Eagles were able to put the game out of reach with the help of a collective 19-20 effort from the line in the second stanza.

Husson out-rebounded Saint Joseph's, 37-18, with 19 offensive boards, and a resulting 24 second chance points, in the victory. The Monks grabbed just 4 offensive caroms and netted 3 second chance points.

Ashley Geel '12 (St. George, ME) added 10 points and 4 blocked shots and Carolyn Freeman '10 (Scarborough, ME/McAuley) netted 9 points for the Monks.

For Husson, Amanda Gifford '12 (Lee, ME) scored 15 points, Bethany Sevey '11 (Skowhegan, ME) added 13 and Kelli Murray '13 (Shamut, ME) tallied 11 points.

St. Joe's shooting line was better than respectable, as the Monks shot 52.3% (23-44) from the floor, 50% (4-8) from three-point range, and 70.8% (17-24) from the line in the loss. Husson shot 44.2% (34-77) from the field, 23.8% (5-21) from beyond the arc and 95% (19-20) from the FT line. The field goal attempts total is the most by an SJC opponent since Emmanuel tossed up 86 shots in a victory over the Monks on January 21st, 2008.

Saint Joseph's will face off against Salve Regina in the Bowdoin Classic on Saturday, January 2nd at 8:00 PM, while Husson is set to take on RPI in the Wheaton Holiday Tournament on January 2nd at 3:00 PM.
