STANDISH, ME – The 2010 Saint Joseph's College Women's Basketball Team Awards have been announced.
Senior forward Meghan Daigle (Grantham, NH) is the recipient of the Most Valuable Player and T.E.A.M. (Teamwork, Effort, Attitude, Motivation) awards, while senior guard Carolyn Freeman (Scarborough, ME/McAuley) is the 2010 Best Defender and sophomore guard Megan McDevitt (Cumberland, ME) is the team's Most Improved Player.
Despite opening the season with an injury, Daigle, who transferred from St. Lawrence before her sophomore year, closed out her three-year career as a Monk with a fine senior campaign. She led the Monks in scoring (12.5 PPG) and rebounding (7.6 RPG) and also shot a team-high 48.3% (98-203) from the field en route to earning Third Team All-GNAC honors. Daigle led the team in scoring in seven different games and paced the Royal Blue on the glass on nine occasions during the 2010 campaign. She also notched six double-doubles, including four such efforts in her last five contests.
Freeman, known primarily for her offensive ability, steadily improved her defensive prowess during her four years as a starter at St. Joe's and caps her career with the team's coveted Defensive Player of the Year honor. She averaged 4.9 rebounds, including 3.4 defensive caroms and 0.7 steals while putting up 10.0 points per game as a senior.
McDevitt enjoyed a fine second season with increased production across the board, both offensively and defensively. She essentially doubled her numbers from a modest freshman year, when McDevitt averaged 5.3 points, 1.5 rebounds and 0.8 assists. In 2010, she netted 10.0 points, 4.0 rebounds and 1.8 assists and led the team in both three-pointers made (43) and three-point percentage (39.4%, 43-109). McDevitt also paced the Royal Blue in free-throw efficiency (86.1%, 31-36) and was the Monks' leading scorer in six different games.
Saint Joseph's posted a 12-12 overall record and went 7-5 in Great Northeast Athletic Conference contests under Head Coach Mike McDevitt '83 during the 2010 season. The Monks narrowly missed the conference playoffs due to GNAC tiebreaker rules, as four teams posted a 7-5 in-league record with three earning the right to advance to postseason play. St. Joe's lost out on the second tiebreaker; head-to-head against the team with the same record against the three other teams involved, and missed the GNAC Tournament for the first time in three years.
