Monks Suffer Buzzer-Beater Loss in Home Opener
STANDISH, ME – Husson University (1-1) edged Saint Joseph's College (2-1), 69-68, in non-conference women's basketball action at the Harold Alfond Center on Thursday night. Sophomore center Morgan Cahill (Yarmouth, Maine) netted a game-high 22 points with five rebounds in what was the Monks' 2013-14 home-opener.

Husson raced out to an 18-7 lead in the opening 10 minutes of play and held the advantage throughout the first half. The Monks opened the second stanza with a 7-0 run to secure a 32-31 lead 1:40 past the break, but the score swing was the first of many in the latter half, as the lead changed hands 12 times and the contest was tied on nine occasions in the closing 20 minutes. The final exchange took place at the buzzer, when sophomore guard Victoria McIntyre (Mars Hill, Maine) nailed a three-pointer to propel the Eagles to a 69-68 triumph.

The Monks shot just 28.6% (6-21) from the floor in the first half but rebounded with a 55.6% (15-27) clip in the second stanza and posted a solid 77.4% (24-31) effort from the free throw line overall.

For Saint Joseph's, Lindsay Moore (Barrington, N.H.) notched a double-double with 15 points and 10 caroms, Abby Young (North Yarmouth, Maine) tallied seven points, nine boards and three assists, Mackenzie Dufour (Augusta, Maine) totaled seven points, five steals and a pair of dimes, and Sarah Assante (Standish, Maine) chipped in six points, three assists and two rebounds in the losing bid.

For Husson, Chandler Guerette (Presque Isle, Maine) scored 20 with three assists and three boards, Amanda Johnson (Skowhegan, Maine) produced 13 points and four caroms and McIntyre came off the bench to net 10 points and pull down five rebounds in 17 minutes.

Saint Joseph's returns to the court on Saturday when the team travels to Castine, Maine for a 1:00 PM tip-off versus Maine Maritime Academy.

 

GAME NOTES:

With the loss, Saint Joseph's falls to 37-31 in the history of the series with Husson…the one-point victory is the fifth such triumph posted by either team during the 68-game matchup and first since the Monks tipped the Eagles, 47-46, at the Alfond Center on December 11th, 2010…the contest between the in-state rivals has been decided by three points or fewer on 14 occasions since the series began in 1980…for Husson, tonight's win is the first over the Monks at the Alfond Center since January of 2005…Cahill surpassed the 400-career-point mark and freshman Danica Gleason netted her first collegiate points in the hard-fought loss…looking ahead, Saint Joseph's owns a 5-4 all-time record versus Maine Maritime…the Monks have defeated the Mariners in consecutive meetings, including a 67-70 triumph at the Alfond Center last December.
