Monks Hold Off Mules, 67-63

WATERVILLE, ME – Sophomore center Morgan Cahill (Yarmouth, Maine) registered game-highs of 24 points and 14 rebounds to help Saint Joseph's College (5-2) defeat Colby College (3-5), 67-63, in a non-conference women's basketball contest on Thursday evening.

Colby held a 33-28 lead at halftime and a hotly contested second stanza featured six lead changes and five tie scores before the Monks captured the advantage for good with a Theresa Hendrix (Scarborough, Maine/Cheverus) layup with 4:29 remaining.

For the Monks, senior forward Abby Young (North Yarmouth, Maine) recorded 15 points and six rebounds, senior guard Mackenzie Dufour (Augusta, Maine) tallied seven points, four boards and a pair of steals, and Hendrix contributed four points, six assists, five rebounds and four steals in the victory.

For the Mules, Desi Smith (Watertown, Wis.) notched a double-double with 14 points and 10 caroms, Mia Diplock (Augusta, Maine) added 12 points and three assists, and Gabe Donahue (Cape Elizabeth, Maine) added nine points, seven rebounds and five assists in the losing effort.

Although the Monks would lead for the final four minutes, the Mules remained in contention and did not trail by more than four points for the duration. With Saint Joseph's leading 63-59, Colby received a basket from Smith with 1:21 left to cut the margin to two points. After Cahill hit a free throw, Donahue hit a baseline jumper with 34 seconds left to cut the margin to 64-63.

Colby had a chance for the win when the Monks missed on a pair of free throws with 14 seconds left. However, the Mules committed a turnover and Lindsay Moore (Barrington, N.H.) made a freebie with four seconds left for a 65-63 lead. Colby was called for a five-second call on the inbounds play, and Dufour nailed two free throws to seal the victory.

Saint Joseph's is off until Saturday, December 14th when the team hosts Framingham State University at 1:00 PM. Colby faces off against Bowdoin College at home on Saturday at 2:00 PM.

With the win, Saint Joseph's improves to 10-12 in the history of the series with Colby College…prior to this evening, the Mules had defeated the Monks in four-consecutive meetings…the Monks' last triumph over Colby – a 71-58 result - took place in Waterville on January 18th, 2005…the Mules toppled the Monks by a 90-54 score in the last meeting between the in-state rivals - a contest played in Waterville on November 21st, 2009…the SJC women's basketball program is now 35-41 all-time versus NESCAC opponents...for Cahill, the double-double was the second of the season and 13th of her career…Cahill's 14 boards sets a new career-high while the point tally ties a personal-best.
