Saint Joseph's Tops Worcester State in 2021 Opener, 61-51

WORCESTER, Mass. – The Saint Joseph's College women's basketball team opened the 2021-22 campaign with a 61-51 victory at Worcester State University (2-2) on Saturday evening.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

In a competitive game that featured seven ties and 11 lead changes, the Monks held a slim 26-25 edge going into intermission and extended their lead with a 20-13 third quarter. Senior guard Cassandra Stapelfeld (Brookline, N.H.) scored 10 of her game-high 20 points in the fourth quarter to seal the win.

With a layup at the beginning of the fourth quarter, the Lancers pulled within six points, but Stapelfeld scored six straight points on layups and converted another bucket with five minutes left to put the visitors on top, 56-45.

Lancers guard Emma Found answered with a three-pointer, but the eight-point deficit was as close as Worcester would get the rest of the way.

STATS OF THE GAME:

The Monks made 17-of-23 shots from the free throw line and outrebounded the Lancers by a 38-23 margin, which led to a 42-24 advantage in points in the paint.

LEADERS – SAINT JOSEPH'S:

  • Stapelfeld led all players with 20 points and added five rebounds and three steals in the triumph
  • Senior guard Kaleigh Walsh (Windham, N.H.) added 16 points, eight rebounds, and three assists
  • Junior forward Jayne Howe (Pembroke, Mass.) netted 10 points with eight rebounds, three assists, and three steals
  • Sophomore Angelica Hurley (Groverland, Mass.) contributed nine points, eight boards and a pair of blocked shots

LEADERS – WORCESTER STATE:

  • Gigi LeMay scored 12 points with eight rebounds and three steals
  • Sarah Blomgren added nine points and four rebounds
  • Erin Gallella chipped in with nine points, five assists, and three steals

HISTORICALLY SPEAKING:

With the win, Saint Joseph's improves to 1-2 all-time versus Worcester State University, a team that defeated the Monks by a 87-81 score in the last meeting between the teams, which took place on January 7th, 2020 in Standish.
