Nor'easters Tip Monks, 70-58

BIDDEFORD, Maine – University of New England (1-4) defeated Saint Joseph's College (1-1), 70-58, in a non-conference women's basketball contest at the Harold Alfond Forum on Thursday evening.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

The Monks held a 25-14 lead after senior guard Cassandra Stapelfeld (Brookline, N.H.) capped a 12-1 run with a free throw at the 3:22 mark of the second quarter, but the Nor'easters closed out the first half by scoring 13 unanswered points and led for the remainder of the game.

St. Joe's managed to cut the deficit to two points (33-31) after Stapelfeld hit a layup 2:30 into the third period, but UNE surged again with 10-consecutive points and maintained a double-digit advantage for the rest of the evening.

STATS OF THE GAME:

The Nor'easters scored 21 points off 20 SJC turnovers and shot 40.3% (27-67) from the floor in the victory. The Monks shot 32.8% (20-61) from the field in the losing effort.

LEADERS – SAINT JOSEPH'S:

  • Senior guard Grace Philippon (Glenburn, Maine) netted a career-high 19 points with six rebounds and was 4-for-5 from three-point distance
  • Junior forward Jayne Howe (Pembroke, Mass.) added 15 points, eight boards, four assists, two steals, and a pair of blocked shots
  • Stapelfeld chipped in with 12 points, five caroms, and four assists
  • Sophomore guard Angelica Hurley (Groverland, Mass.) contributed seven rebounds, three assists, and three points

LEADERS – UNIVERSITY OF NEW ENGLAND:

  • Sophomore guard Jordyn Franzen (Salem, N.H.) led all scorers with 23 points and added eight rebounds, four steals, and three blocked shots
  • Junior forward Kaylee Beyor (Hinesburg, Vt.) netted 16 points with seven caroms and two rejections
  • Sophomore guard Juliana Tracey (Quincy, Mass.) added 11 points and eight rebounds

HISTORICALLY SPEAKING:

With the result, Saint Joseph's falls to 35-18 in the history of the series with University of New England.
