Saint Joseph’s Topples Thomas, 76-41

STANDISH, Maine – Saint Joseph's College (5-1) toppled Thomas College, 76-41, in a non-conference women's basketball contest at the Harold Alfond Center on Wednesday evening.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

The in-state rivals traded the lead four times in an uneven first quarter, but the Monks held the Terriers to just eight points in the second stanza and outscored the visitors by a 27-12 margin in the third period on the way to a lopsided victory.

Saint Joseph's held a 37-25 lead after Thomas senior guard Kaylee Ravagli (Lowell, Mass.) made a layup with 6:46 left in the third frame and the hosts notched a 20-6 run during the remaining minutes of the quarter to mount a 55-29 advantage going into the final stanza. Senior guard Cassandra Stapelfeld (Brookline, N.H.) netted eight points during the SJC outburst.

The Monks held a game-high 37-point lead after freshman guard Satyra Duong (Waterboro, Maine) made a layup with 10 seconds left in the contest.

STATS OF THE GAME:

The Monks shot 45.0% (27-60) from the field, 64.3% (9-14) from three-point distance, and 86.7% (13-15) from the free throw line while the Terriers struggled to find their shooting stroke, posting 33.3% (18-54), 9.1% (1-11), and 26.7% (4-15) efforts from the floor, beyond the arc, and the FT line in the loss.

LEADERS – SAINT JOSEPH'S:

  • Stapelfeld led all players with 22 points and added three rebounds with a pair of steals
  • Junior forward Jayne Howe (Pembroke, Mass.) tallied 11 points, seven rebounds, five assists, and a pair of blocked shots
  • Senior guard Kaleigh Walsh (Windham, N.H.) chipped in with 10 points, five rebounds, and two steals
  • Sophomore guard Angelica Hurley (Groverland, Mass.) added eight points and four rebounds
  • Sophomore guard Hailey Anderson (Beverly, Mass.) came off the bench to register eight points and five rebounds

LEADERS – THOMAS:

  • Ravagli scored 14 points with four rebounds and three steals
  • Senior guard Anna Piirainen (West Paris, Maine) added 11 points, four boards, and two assists
  • Sophomore forward Samantha Fortin (New Gloucester, Maine) grabbed eight rebounds and scored four points

HISTORICALLY SPEAKING:

With the victory, Saint Joseph's improves to 60-4 in the history of the series with Thomas College and has now defeated the Terriers in 12-consecutive meetings dating back to the 2008-09 campaign.

Saint Joseph's will host Albertus Magnus College on Saturday in a Great Northeast Athletic Conference contest slated to start at 1:00 PM.
