STANDISH, Maine – Saint Joseph's College (9-3, 4-0 GNAC) trounced Rivier University (7-7, 4-2 GNAC), 86-51, in a Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) women's basketball contest at the Harold Alfond Center on Saturday afternoon.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
The Monks dominated the first quarter on both ends of the court, as the hosts shot 64.3% (9-14) – including a 4-for-4 effort from deep – and held the Raiders to just 1-for-12 (8.3%) shooting to secure a 26-9 cushion going into the second stanza.
The second quarter was essentially a carbon copy of the first as St. Joe's outscored Rivier by a 20-6 margin en route to holding a 46-15 advantage heading into intermission. The Monks made 8-of-11 three-point attempts and shot 60.1% (17-28) overall in the first half. The Raiders shot just 13.8% (4-29) from the field in the opening two periods combined and went 0-for-16 from beyond the arc before hitting their first trifecta of the game at the 2:25 mark of the third quarter.
Saint Joseph's went on claim a game-high 46-point (61-15) lead after junior guard Hailey Anderson (Beverly, Mass.) drilled a three-pointer with 4:24 left in the third frame.
STATS OF THE GAME:
Saint Joseph's shot 49.2% (29-59) from the field, 61.1% (11-18) from three-point land, and 70.8% (17-24) from the FT line while Rivier posted 27.4% (17-62), 14.3% (3-21), and 73.7% (14-19) percentages from the floor, downtown, and the charity stripe, respectively.
LEADERS – SAINT JOSEPH'S:
- Junior guard Angelica Hurley (Groveland, Mass.) tallied 20 points, 11 rebounds, six assists, three steals, and three blocked shots and was 6-for-8 from the floor, including a 5-for-6 effort from three-point distance
- Freshman guard Logan Brown (Brunswick, Maine) came off the bench to net 12 points with three rebounds in just 13 minutes
- Senior forward Jayne Howe (Pembroke, Mass.) added 10 points, eight rebounds, and three assists
- Junior guard Nina Howe (York, Maine) contributed eight points, six assists, and four rebounds
- Junior guard Hannah Talon (Windham, Maine) scored eight points with six boards and two assists
- Freshman guard Elisabeth Stapelfeld (Brookline, N.H.) chipped in with six points, three rebounds, two assists, and a pair of steals
- Anderson added eight points and three assists
- Senior forward Katie Whitmore (South Portland, Maine) scored five points with a pair of rebounds
LEADERS – RIVIER:
- Junior guard Lyric Grumblatt (Manchester, N.H.) led the visitors with 18 points on 5-for-21 shooting and a 6-for-6 performance from the line while pulling down nine rebounds and pilfering three steals
- Freshman guard Brianna Wilcox (Londonderry, N.H.) added nine points and four boards
- Junior forward Sophia Abdallah (Watertown, Mass.) contributed five points, six caroms, and two steals
HISTORICALLY SPEAKING:
With the triumph Saint Joseph's improves to 20-5 all-time versus Rivier University and has now defeated the Raiders in eight-consecutive meetings dating back to the 2016-17 campaign.
