STANDISH, Maine – The Maine Women's Basketball Coaches Association (MWBCA) weekly awards have been released and Saint Joseph's College freshman guard Elisabeth Stapelfeld (Brookline, N.H.) has been selected as the MWBCA Co-Rookie of the Week.
Stapelfeld averaged 13.0 points and 2.0 steals per game while shooting 68.4% (13-19) from the floor in a pair of convincing GNAC wins last week. The freshman guard netted 12 points in a decisive 76-48 triumph over Regis on Tuesday and added 14 points on 7-for-9 shooting in just 20 minutes versus Elms College on Saturday.
In 26 games this winter Stapelfeld is averaging 10.2 points, 3.3 rebounds, and 21. Assists per game while shooting 49.5% (100-202) from the floor, 35.4% (23-65) from three-point range, and 82.0% (41-50) from the free throw line. The freshman standout leads the team in FT%, ranks second in FG%, and third in scoring average as of February 22nd.
Stapelfeld shares her fifth MWBCA weekly accolade with Southern Maine freshman Vanessa Vaughan (Hantsport, Nova Scotia), who was the Huskies' leading scorer in a 53-38 win at UMass Boston, recording her 13th game in double-figures scoring. Vaughan had six points in a 71-54 win over WestConn in the Huskies' regular season finale.
Saint Joseph's, the #1 seed in the GNAC North Division, will host #3N Rivier University in a tourney semifinal on Friday at 7:00 PM.
