Monks Fall at UNE, 68-55

BIDDEFORD, Maine -- Senior Jordyn Franzen led all players with 24 points to help the University of New England women's basketball team to a 68-55 non-conference victory over Saint Joseph's College on Wednesday evening (Nov. 15) at Coach Beaudry's Court inside the Harold Alfond Forum.

UNE won for the second consecutive outing to improve to 3-1 on the young season, while the Monks (2-1) suffered their first setback.

Franzen poured in 15 of her game-high point total after halftime, as the Nor'easters outscored the visitors by a 38-22 margin over the final two quarters to erase a 33-30 halftime deficit. Franzen finished 10-for-19 from the floor and grabbed six rebounds. Faye Veilleux chipped in with 15 points and seven boards, while Kaylee Beyor contributed a double-double (10 points, 11 rebounds). First-year point guard Sydney Jenisch filled the stat sheet, tallying 12 points, five rebounds, four assists and four steals in 40 minutes of action.

Grace Ramsdell paced the Monks with 22 points and four blocked shots. Nina Howe went for 11 points and seven caroms, while Elisabeth Stapelfeld had 10 points.

After a Ramsdell layup pushed St. Joe's lead to five (35-30) coming out of halftime, the Nor'easters went on a 16-5 run to grab the lead for good. Beyor had three consecutive buckets to get the spurt going, and Veilleux added two field goals, including a three-pointer at the 4:23 mark to cap the run. UNE would go on to lead 52-42 at the end of three quarters, and St. Joe's was unable to get the deficit to single digits in the fourth quarter.

For the game, UNE shot just under 40 percent from the floor (27 of 68) and made 6 of 16 three-point attempts (37.5 percent).

The Nor'easters will return to action next Monday (Nov. 20) when they travel to Paxton, Mass. to take on Anna Maria College. St. Joe's will head to Bangor to take on rival Husson University on Saturday (Nov. 18).
