Monks Rally To Defeat U-Mass. Boston, 4-3

Standish, Maine- Sophomore Andy Exley stroked a two-out, two-run double in the bottom of the sixth inning to help lead Saint Joseph's College to a 4-3 come-from-behind victory over visiting University of Massachusetts at Boston at Larry Mahaney Diamond on Sunday, April 13. The win boosted the Monks to 10-12 overall, while the Beacons fell to 4-14-1 overall.

Exley delivered his game-winning blow off of Beacons Matt Ahl, who fell to 0-2 on the year. The Saint Joseph's College outfielder drove Ahl's first pitch into left-center field to drive in teammates Dana DiRenzo and Tyler Bryant.

UMass-Boston appeared to be cruising toward its fifth win of the season behind starting pitcher Matt Ahl, who limited the Monks to two runs on three hits through five innings. Ahl chalked up five strikeouts, before giving up the 3-2 lead. Batchelder, who pitched seven innings, picked up the win and improved to 1-3 on the season, giving up three runs, two earned, and striking out six.

The Beacons had the tying run in scoring position in the top of the seventh inning with one out, against Saint Joseph's pitcher Alan Batchelder, who entered the game with a record of 0-3. Beacons center fielder Johnny Ingalls reached on an error, and then advanced to second, but could not cross the plate as Batchelder struck out the final two batters.

The Beacons jumped out to a 3-0 lead after the top of the fourth inning on singles by Bob Kniffen and Kevin Conway. Kniffen stole second and was moved to third after a Chris King groundout. The single by Conway drove in Kniffen to push the lead to 3-0.
