Bowdoin College Holds On To Escape Monks, 7-6

Polar Bears score 6 runs in the second inning and never look back

Brunswick, Maine – Jimmy Shea had two hits and two RBI and each Polar Bear position player registered a hit to lead Bowdoin College (12-11) to a 7-6 victory over visiting Saint Joseph's College (13-13) in a single game at Polar Bear Field.

Bowdoin reliever Erik Morrison (1-0) picked up the win out of the bullpen, tossing 1.1 scoreless innings as the Polar Bears held on for the win. Travis Dube held Saint Joseph's scoreless over the final one innings to earn his second save of the season.

The Polar Bears took a 6-0 lead in the top of the second inning, in part thanks to some shaky pitching by the Monks. Bowdoin loaded the bases with one outs before Justin King drove in Tom McMahon with the first run on a single, and Ivan Lucuk scored on a single from Jared Lemieux. King and Lucuk scored the third and fourth runs of the inning when Jimmy Shea doubled. Bowdoin made the score 6-0 when Rick LeClerc’s and McMahon’s RBI single and RBI sacrifice fly finished the scoring in the second.

Saint Joseph's College mounted a comeback in the top of the third. Nick Mirabello led off the frame with a walk, took second base after a pitch hit Tyler Bryant. Both runners advanced to second and third on a groundout from Andy Exley. A two-run single from Derek McIntosh pushed the Monks first runs across the board. McIntosh later scored on a wild pitch to pull the Monks within 6-3.

Bowdoin pushed the lead to 7-3 with a RBI single from Jon Rosenthal, his only hit of the game, in the third inning.

The Monks scored once in the fifth and twice in the seventh, cutting the lead to 7-6. Jesse LaCasse drew a one-out walk and then scored three batters later on Nick Arno's single threw the left side of the infield. A two-run home run from LaCasse scored McIntosh to pull the Monks within one run, the closet they would get.

Monks starter Charlie Buker (2-3) took the loss after allowing seven runs in 6.0 innings of work.
