Schaffer Pitches Monks Past Bates, 7-1

Senior pitcher holds Bates to one run over seven innings

Standish, Maine- Jarrett Schaffer scattered gave up five hits over seven innings and Jack Hughes had two hits and two RBI to lead Saint Joseph's College (14-14) to a 7-1 win over visiting Bates College (6-11) in the second game of the doubleheader on Wednesday evening at Larry Mahaney Diamond.

Saint Joseph's College starter Jarrett Shaffer (4-1) won his fourth consecutive start after allowing just one unearned run in seven innings. He allowed seven hits and walked one batter while striking out five.

The Monks jumped out to a 3-1 lead in the bottom of the first inning to take control of the game. Andy Exley, Nick Mirabello, Derek McIntosh, and Jesse LaCasse led off the game with a walk, single, and two more walks respectively, the last of which drove in Exley to give Saint Joseph's College a 1-0 lead. Ben Muniz plated Mirabello with a sacrifice fly and McIntosh capped the inning when he reached home on a passed ball.

Saint Joseph's broke the game open with four runs in the third inning to push the lead to 7-1. Jack Hughes delivered a two-run single in the frame, while Lucas Hannigan added a RBI walk, and Jake Rodden scored on a wild pitch to end the Monks scoring.

Bates scored its only run in the top of the first inning on a RBI double by Nate Maxwell. Maxwell went 2-for-3 in the loss. Starter Chris Farmer (0-1) took the loss for the Bobcats, allowing six runs in 2.1 innings of work.

Hughes led the Monks offense with two hits and two RBI, while McIntosh, Mirabello, and Dana DiRenzo added one hit apiece.
