Saint Joseph's College Sweeps Doubleheader From Beavers

Saint Joseph's College unleashed 24 hits and 16 runs while sweeping a doubleheader from visiting Farmington, 10-0 and 6-2, at Larry Mahaney Diamond on Tuesday, April 8. The two wins lifted the Monks to 6-12 on the season, while Farmington fell to 0-4.

Sophomore Howard Rutherford led Saint Joseph's hit parade with five hits in the two games, while senior Nick Mirabello chipped in with four hits. Nine different Monk players came up with hits on the day, and seven of those nine players recorded multiple-hit performances.

Saint Joseph's College jumped in front in the opener with two runs in the bottom of the first inning, highlighted by freshman Tyler Bryant's two-run home run to leftfield. It was the first home run of the season for Bryant.

The Monks added seven more runs in the next four innings and then closed their scoring with a solo run in the bottom of the sixth inning. Rutherford had three hits in the game, while freshman Dana DiRenzo, sophomore Andy Exley, seniors Justin Lambert and Nick Mirabello each added a pair of hits.

Saint Joseph's College starting pitcher Jerrett Shaffer went six innings and struck out one, while walking one, to pick up his second win of the season.

Rutherford led the way in the nightcap with two hits in three trips to the plate, including a double and a homerun. He drove in one run and scored twice. Senior leftfielder Nick Mirabello chipped in with two hits, a run and a RBI in two trips to the plate.

Sophomore right-hander Ben Starta pitched the first four innings and earned his first win of the year. Freshman Steve Lambert, senior Nolan Beckwith, and sophomore Matt Vasil closed out the final three innings allowing only one hit and one run. The Monks hurlers chalked up a combined six strikeouts.

St. Joe's, riding a two-game winning streak, will face Husson in a single game on Thursday, April 10.
