Markakis & Gruntkosky Shining for North Shore Navigators

STANDISH, ME - Saint Joseph's rising juniors Alex Markakis (Lynnfield, Mass./St. John's Prep) and Joe Gruntkosky (Peabody, Mass./Peabody) are thriving in the Futures Collegiate Baseball League (FCBL) as members of the North Shore Navigators.

Gruntkosky, a right-handed pitcher, is 3-1 with a 2.03 ERA and 34 strikeouts in 48.2 innings this summer. He leads the Navigators' pitching staff in innings and is tied for the team-lead in starts (8) while ranking second on the club in ERA and strikeouts. For his efforts, Gruntkosky was selected to play in the FCBL All-Star Game last month.

As a sophomore, Gruntkosky went 3-2 with a 3.12 ERA and 46 K's in 49 innings as one of the Monks' top starting pitchers.

Markakis, a right-handed hitter, has seen time in the outfield, at third base, and as the Navigators' designated hitter this summer and has fared well at the plate. He is currently hitting .316 (24-76) with 13 runs, five doubles, 14 RBI, and a .382 on-base percentage. Markakis ranks fourth on the team in both batting average and OBP so far this summer.

Markakis enjoyed a solid sophomore season for the Monks, hitting .289 (33-114) with 22 runs, six doubles, and 17 RBI.
