Polar Bears Clip Monks, 6-5

BRUNSWICK, Maine – Bowdoin College (12-6) scored two runs in the seventh inning to rally past Saint Joseph's College (10-15), 6-5, in a non-conference baseball contest on Wednesday afternoon.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

Trailing 2-1 in the top of the third, the Monks took advantage of three Bowdoin errors to score three runs on a pair of hits, as junior Luke Stephens (Glastonbury, Conn.) notched an RBI single and senior Jackson Stanton (Saugus, Mass.) lofted a sacrifice fly to make it a 4-2 game.

In the bottom of the fifth, the Polar Bears managed to tie the game with two runs on a pair of hits and an SJC error. Freshman center fielder Jared Wilhelm (Tolland, Conn.) lifted the Monks to a 5-4 lead with a two-out RBI double in the top of the sixth.

The edge lasted barely an inning as Bowdoin proceeded to take the lead for good in the bottom of the seventh with two runs on four hits. Nick Merrill delivered the game-winning run with a two-out base hit to left field.

ON THE MOUND:

Saint Joseph's deployed seven different pitchers in the setback and freshman starter Padraig Mac Seain (Brookline, N.H.) did not factor into the decision after allowing four runs (three earned) on five hits and a walk over 4.1 innings. Sophomore reliever Zack Adams (Norton, Mass.) suffered the loss after yielding two runs on two hits with a strikeout in 0.2 innings of relief. Matthew Bergeron (Salem, N.H.), Matthew Murphy (Plymouth, Mass.), Sean McDonough (Concord, N.H.), Brendan McCaffrey (Warwick, R.I.), and Samuel Jalbert (Mascouche, Que.) all threw in relief for the Royal Blue.

Jackson Melendy earned the win in relief for the Polar Bears after giving up a run on two hits in two innings of work.

OFF THE BAT:

  • Wilhelm went 2-4 with two runs, a double, and an RBI
  • Stephens was 2-5 with an RBI
  • For Bowdoin, CJ Brito-Trinidad went 3-5 with two runs and two RBI and Gabe Peckler was 2-4 with a run, two doubles, and three RBI
