Monks Fall to UNE in Season Opener

Biddeford, Me. - The SJC field hockey team (0-1) held the University of New England scoreless for 32 minutes, but eventually dropped a 2-0 decision in their season opener. Taryn Flagg gave the Nor'easters (2-0) the lead after netting a penalty stroke at 32:30 and UNE outshot St. Joe's 12-5 in the first half.

The Monks came out strong in the second half and held an advantage in shots (8-6) and penalty corners (5-2) but were unable to convert on scoring opportunities. Lisa Baillargeon put UNE up 2-0 on a shot through traffic at 49:35 for the only other goal of the game.

St. Joe's was paced by strong play in the middle from SR Kristine Benere (Ayer, MA) and stellar performances by first year players Kimberly Glynn (Danvers, MA) and Jillian Kimball (Albany Township, ME). Sophomore Lauren Snow (Dover-Foxcroft, ME) was solid on defense and FY Karrie Sirois (Thomaston, ME) had 8 saves in the loss.

The team takes on Maine Farmington on Sept. 9 at 1:00 p.m. in the home opener.
