STANDISH, ME - For the second consecutive season,
the Saint Joseph's College field hockey team has been selected to
play in the Eastern College Athletic Conference Championship
Tournament. The Lady Monks, 14-5 overall and 5-1 in North Atlantic
Conference play this season, have been tabbed as the #4 seed and
will host fifth-seeded Worcester State College (11-9, 3-2 MASCAC)
on Wednesday at 1:30 PM at Lakeside Field.
St. Joe's, led by fourth-year Head Coach Rupert
Lewis , saw their conference title hopes fade when
they lost to top-seeded Castleton State College, 4-3 in overtime,
in the North Atlantic Conference Championship match on
Saturday.
The Lady Monks have posted a record breaking season, as far as team
and individual marks are concerned. With a 4-2 win over Castleton
on October 5th, Coach Lewis became the winningest
coach in program history and looks to add to his total of 35 wins.
As a team, St. Joe's has posted a .737 winning percentage and
tallied 73 goals, 64 assists and 210 points, all new
program-highs.
Kayla Nowell '11 (Bridgton, ME),
an NAC First-Team selection, leads the SJC offense this fall with
20 goals and 55 points, both single-season record totals at St.
Joe's. NAC Second Team honoree Julia
Ostrowski '10 (Albany, NY) has tallied 16 goals,
15 assists and 47 points this season and has a program-best 88
career points. Nowell and Ostrowski share the program goals record
with 28 apiece.
Senior captain and NAC First Team member Gina
Gaetani 09 (Auburn, ME) is third on the team in
scoring with 12 goals and 28 points. Her 48 career points ranks
fifth-best in team history.
Freshman goalkeeper Meaghan
Johnson (Portland, ME/Cheverus) has notched a
program-best four shutouts, 1.53 goals-against average and .784
save percentage this season.
The Lancers, led by third-year Head Coach Reneé LaValley,
will appear in the ECAC tournament for the fifth time in the last
seven years after suffering a 2-1 setback to Plymouth state in a
conference quarterfinal match last week.
Sophomore Angela Johnson (Ashby, MA) leads her team in scoring with
eight goals and 19 points with teammate Megan Rosborough 09
(Uxbridge, MA) close behind with five goals and 16 points. Senior
goalkeeper Erin MacDonald (Dedham, MA) anchors the WSC defense with
five shutouts, 1.83 goals-against average and stingy .853 save
percentage, which ranks ninth in all of NCAA D III field
hockey.
The winner will face top ranked Endicott on the road in the
semifinals on Saturday. In the other bracket, # 2 seed Plymouth
State will host seventh seeded Framingham State while third seeded
Westfield State will entertain #6 Becker with both matches slated
to be played on Wednesday. The championship game will be held
Sunday at the highest remaining seed.
