Huskies Chase Monks, 3-1

GORHAM, ME - University of Southern Maine (7-5) defeated visiting Saint Joseph's (6-3, 2-1 NAC) 3-1 on Thursday afternoon. Kayla Nowell '11 (Bridgton, ME) scored her team-leading 11th goal of the season in the loss.

The Lady Monks dominated the offensive end of the field but were unable to solve USM keeper Allison Hill '10 (Cape Elizabeth, ME), who made 13 saves in the victory, until the 24th minute of the second half when Nowell scooped a pass from Julia Ostrowski '10 (Albany, NY) to cut the Huskies lead to 2-1 at the time.

St. Joe's held a 19-10 advantage in shots and a 13-6 edge in penalty corners over Southern Maine in the losing effort.

Bethany Bougie '12 (Sanford, ME) put USM on the board 7:02 into the contest on a penalty stroke and the 1-0 lead stood for the next 42 minutes of play. Caitlin Albert '10 (Scarborough, ME) attempted a long shot that was deflected past SJC keeper Meaghan Johnson '12 (Portland, ME/Cheverus HS) by Anna Pease '09 (Gorham, ME) at the 49:34 mark to lift the home team to a 2-0 edge.

St. Joe's scored on the team's 18th shot of the game at 58:45 when Nowell placed a hard shot to the far side of the goal following a terrific individual effort and centering pass from Ostrowski to cut the USM lead to 2-1.

Nowell's goal is one away from tying Jen Marsh for the single-season mark of 12 goals, which was set in 2000. Ostrowki's assist on the play was her 8th of the year is also one shy of tying the SJC season record (held by three players: Marsh '00, '01; Monique Crawford '05, and Ostrowski '06).

In the three minutes following the Nowell goal, St. Joe's rattled off four unsuccessful penalty corners and Alyssa Dunn '11 (Standish, ME) steered a shot on goal that was turned away by Hill.

Whitney MacDaniel '12 (Livermore, ME) added an insurance goal with just three seconds remaining on the game clock to help lift the Huskies to the 3-1 triumph.

Kelly Emerson '09 (Vassalboro, ME) posted two shots on net and Johnson made three saves in goal for the Lady Monks. Kim Glynn '10 (Danvers, MA) made her third defensive save of the season in the loss.

Southern Maine returns to action on Saturday (1:30 PM) when they travel to Little East Conference rival Keene State. St. Joseph's College is at Salve Regina on Saturday (1:00 PM).
