WATERVILLE, ME - Colby College (3-1) defeated Saint
Joseph's (4-1), 5-0, in a non-conference field hockey game on
Wednesday afternoon at Bill Alfond Field. SJC keeper
Meaghan Johnson '12 (Portland,
ME/Cheverus) made seven saves in the loss.
Heather Quadir (Medfield, MA) scored three goals and added an
assist for the Mules and goalies Liz Fontaine (Wilbraham, MA) and
Casey Atwater (Baltimore, MD) combined for three saves to earn the
shutout.
Quadir has five goals and four assists for 14 points in Colby's 3-1
start to the season. She scored the first three goals of the game
and added the assist on the fourth score.
The Mules, who play host to Williams College at 1 p.m. Saturday,
went ahead for good when Quadir tallied at 12:36 off a pass from
Sally Klose (McLean, VA). Colby went up 2-0 at the halftime break
when Lucy Gerrity (Cumberland, ME) picked up her first collegiate
point with an assist on Quadir's second goal with 7:08 to play.
Quadir scored just 5:19 into the second half on a short blast from
the right side of the goal. She took a pass from Ashley Wagner
(Sudbury, MA), closed in on goal, and ripped the shot past
Johnson.
First-year forward Courtney Erskine (Turner, ME) got her second
goal of the season when she pounded home a shot from immediately in
front of the goal off a cross by Quadir.
First-year midfielder Connie Jangro (Reading, MA) got her first
collegiate goal on a short shot off a pass from Wagner.
St. Joe's will host NAC rival Husson University on Saturday at 3:00
PM, while Colby is set to host NESCAC foe Williams College on
Saturday at 1:00 PM.
