Nowell Ties Program Points Record in 5-1 Win over Simmons

STANDISH, ME – Kayla Nowell '11 (Bridgton, ME) tallied six points with two goals and a pair of assists in a 5-1 Saint Joseph's (10-3, 5-0 NAC) victory over Simmons College (5-8, 2-4 NAC) in a North Atlantic Conference Field Hockey match at Lakeside Field on Sunday afternoon.

With the scoring outburst, Nowell is now tied with Julia Ostrowski '10 for the Monks' career points record. Ostrowski tallied 131 points (46 goals, 39 assists) in 73 contests over four seasons and Nowell has now achieved the same point total, with 51 goals and 29 assists in 69 career games.

Courtney Rague '11 (Old Orchard Beach, ME) also scored twice for the Monks and Sarah Bartell '12 (Exeter, NH) chipped in with a marker in the SJC offensive onslaught.

Nowell opened the game scoring just 2:10 after the opening whistle and proceeded to score her second goal of the match at the 16:15 mark to provide the Royal Blue with a 2-0 cushion. Rague beat Sharks netminder Renna Smith '14 (Belfast, ME) four minutes later off a Nowell dish to give the Monks a 3-0 lead heading into intermission.

Bartell netted her seventh goal of the year in the 48th minute off Nowell's second helper of the afternoon and Simmons rookie TJ Cowin (Newry, ME) steered a shot past St. Joe's keeper Jackie Goodell '14 (Lebanon, NH) nine minutes later, off a Monica Doucette '14 (Rockport, ME) pass, to make it a 4-1 game. With 52 seconds remaining, Rague capped the action with her ninth tally of the season off an Alyssa Dunn '11 (Standish, ME) feed.

Smith made 13 saves for the Sharks, while St. Joe's keepers Meaghan Johnson '12 (Portland, ME/Cheverus) and Goodell combined to face just one shot – Cowin's marker, which was allowed by Goodell. Johnson has now started 38 consecutive games for the Monks.

The Monks have now won at least 10 games in four straight seasons and five times in the history of the program. Today's victory also was the 60th of Head Coach Rupert Lewis' career. Lewis has a 60-43 (.583) record over five-plus seasons and is the most successful skipper in SJC Field Hockey history.

St. Joe's, winners of four straight and seven of the last eight, will host non-conference foe Endicott College on Wednesday at 3:00 PM. Simmons is set to host Western New England on Wednesday at 7:00 PM.
