Saint Joseph's Places 12th in Men's NEISDA Championship

BRISTOL, RI - The Saint Joseph's College men's swimming team placed 12th in the program's first-ever appearance at the New England Intercollegiate Swimming and Diving Championship, hosted by Roger Williams University over the weekend. Kevin Towne '12 (Shrewsbury, MA) broke three individual team records at the event, including a 28.05 preliminary time in the 50-Back. The Monks competed in the finals in three relay competitions in the meet and placed 12th with a 3:54 time in the 400-Free relay on Sunday.

Keene State was crowned champions of the regional meet with 629 team points, ending a four year run by Bentley University. The championship for the Owls was the first in program history and the second for Keene in two weeks, as the women's program clinched the NEISDA title last weekend.

On Friday, the men's 200-Free relay team collected the program's first points in the regional event by finishing 12th to gain two points. Also, Jordan Simenas '12 (Cambridge, MA) and Towne set new team records in the 50-Breast (34.34) and 200-Back (2:16.77), respectively, in the preliminary round.

On Saturday, Towne set a new program record with a 1:10.50 effort in the preliminary round of the 100-Back event and the 200-Medley relay team placed 12th in the finals with a 2:01.14 time.

The meet caps the 2009 season for the men's and women's swimming program. The women played out their schedule to a 7-1 tilt under first-year Head Coach Rick Horr as 14 individual and five relay program records were topped during the year. On February 7th, Saint Joseph's hosted Husson University in the first collegiate meet ever held in the Harold Alfond Center pool. The Lady Monks toppled the Eagles on the historic day, 170-84.

Although the men failed to win a meet, the second-year program, also under Horr's tutelage, scored a program-high 73 points in a loss to Regis College on November 23rd. In all, 12 individual records were broken by the men in the 2009 campaign.
