GNAC CHAMPIONSHIP: Day Two Recap

WELLESLEY, Mass. – Saint Joseph's College wrapped up day two of the 2023 Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) Men's and Women's Swimming & Diving Championships at the Boston Sports Institute – home of the 2012 Olympic Trials - on the campus of Wellesley College on Saturday night. Through 36 events, both SJC squads sit in fifth place as the women have accrued 315 points and the men have registered 29 points.

Going into the final day of the three-day championship meet, Norwich University holds commanding leads on both sides of the ledger. The Cadets have all but clinched the men's title with 348.5 points, well out of reach of current runner-up University of Saint Joseph, which has notched 126 points. Regis College (78.5), Colby-Sawyer College (59), and Saint Joseph's (29) round out the five-team men's field.

On the women's side, Norwich has earned 508 points, safely ahead of runner-up Simmons University, which as tallied 433 points through two days. Colby-Sawyer (392), University of Saint Joseph (343), Saint Joseph's (315), Regis (263), Albertus Magnus College (185), and Elms College (44) complete the eight-team docket.

Two more SJC records were broken on the second day of the GNAC meet, as sophomore Kiley Matthews (South Portland, Maine) set a new mark with a 25.40 time in the 50-Free while Anna Walker (Scarborough, Maine), Brooke Podsiadlo (Granby, Mass.), Tiffany Twombly (Sanford, Maine), and Matthews bested the Monks' 200-Free Relay record with a 1:46.10 performance.

THE RUNDOWN – WOMEN:

  • Twombly notched her second runner-up finish of the GNAC's with a 2:43.21 time in the 200-Breast
  • Matthews placed third and set a new team record with a 25.40 time in the 50-Free
  • Podsiadlo was third in the 500-Free (5:43.01)
  • Freshman Elise Soucy (Saco, Maine) finished fourth in the 200-Breast (2:56.97)
  • Walker placed sixth in the 50-Back (30.81)
  • First-year Emma Westgate (Sanford, Maine) was 15th in the 500-Free (7:21.02)
  • Soucy, Twombly, Podsiadlo, and Matthews posted a third-place finish in the 800-Free Relay (9:02.41)

THE RUNDOWN – MEN:

  • Freshman Lucas Fendl (Ellsworth, Maine) placed third in the 100-Fly (55.20)
  • Sophomore Zachery Creekmore (New Fairfield, Conn.) was sixth in the 200-Breast (2:54.44)

The 2023 GNAC Championship concludes tomorrow, with the prelims starting at 10:00 AM and the finals kicking off at 5:30 PM.
