Men's Swimming Edged by Gordon College, 98-97

STANDISH, ME – Gordon College defeated Saint Joseph's, 98-97, in men's swimming action at the Alfond Center on Saturday afternoon. Adam Gaulin '14 (Belfast, ME) registered three top finishes, and broke three team-records, in the one-point setback.

Ultimately, a lack of depth prevented the Monks from notching the first victory in program history. The Royal Blue featured four swimmers in the head to head meet while nine Gordon athletes participated in the event. Although St. Joe's fell short of collecting a landmark triumph, the team's 97 total points is a new program best.

Gaulin 400-IM topped his own time in the 400-IM (4:53.07) and broke the individual marks in the 100-Fly (1:00.00) and 50-Fly (27.04) events. He also swam a leg for the Monks' record-breaking 200-Free relay team (1:41.35) and has broken records in each of his 11 individual events. A mid-year transfer, Gaulin currently holds nine team marks through four meets this season.

Thomas Smith '14 (New Hartford, CT), Kevin Towne '12 (Shrewsbury, MA) and Brian Grasser '12 (Groton, CT) also swam legs in the 200-Free relay.

Smith also enjoyed a banner afternoon with top finishes in the 100-Free (54.69), 200-Free (2:03.11) and 500-Free (5:47.10) events. Towne placed first in the 50-Back (28.43) and 100-Back (1:02.13) competitions and earned a second-place finish in the 100-IM (1:05.01). Grasser placed second in the 50-Free (27.22) event.

The men will cap the 2010-11 campaign with a trip to the NCAA DIII New England Regional meet, which takes place February 18-20.
