Monks Breeze Past Fighting Scots, 129-98

STANDISH, ME – Saint Joseph's defeated Gordon College, 129-98, in men's swimming action at the Harold Alfond Center Pool on Saturday afternoon. Freshman standout Alexander Gilvey (Windham, Maine) recorded three individual victories in the Monks' final head-to-head meet of the season.

Gilvey helped lead the Royal Blue to their second win of the season with triumphs in the 50-Back (26.78), 100-Back (57.56) and 100-IM (1:00.67) and sophomore Antonio DelVecchio (Middlebury, Conn.) won the 1000-Free (11:33) and 50-Free (23.62) and finished as the runner-up in the 100-IM (1:03.51) in the convincing team victory.

Sophomore Evan Wright (Preston, Conn.), a first-year swimmer, won the 100-Free (54.66) and was the runner-up in the 50-Fly (27.33) while junior captain Thomas Smith (New Hartford, Conn.) recorded three runner-up efforts with second-place finishes in the 1000-Free (11:42.20), 50-Breast (32.55) and 100-Breast (1:12.54) competitions.

Other top performers for the Monks include sophomore Preston Bowden (Biddeford, Maine), who placed second in the 50-Back (28.42) and 100-Back (1:01.78) and sophomore Chris Cullity (North Reading, Mass.), who was the runner-up in the 200-Free (2:03.16) and 500-Free (5:29.16). Freshman Andrew Merlino (Natick, Mass.) also recorded a runner-up effort with a 26.07 time in the 50-Free.

Gilvey, Smith, Bowden and Wright kicked off the meet on the men's side with a victory in the 200-Medley Relay with a 1:48.77 performance.

Saint Joseph's will close out the 2012-13 campaign with an appearance in the New England Intercollegiate Swimming and Diving Association (NEISDA) Championships in White River Junction, Vermont. The three-day event begins on Friday at 10:00 AM and continues through Sunday.
