GNAC Softball All-Conference Teams Announced

STANDISH, ME – The Great Northeast Athletic Conference has announced the 2010 All-Conference teams and seven team members have been honored.

Head Coach Jamie Smyth '92 has been selected as the 2010 GNAC Coach of the Year after leading the Monks to a 30-10 overall record and the #2 seed in the conference tourney with a 21-3 GNAC record. Smyth, 285-226 in his 13-year career, has now won six yearly individual honors while serving as the SJC skipper and helped lead the 2010 team to a program-record 23-game winning streak.

Shortstop Liddy van der Linden '10 (Worcester, MA), first baseman Alyssa Dunn '11 (Standish, ME) and outfielder Emily Leverone '12 (Hampton, NH) have received First Team honors; pitcher Madylan Kluna '12 (Standish, ME) and outfielder Danyelle Shufelt '13 (Sutton, VT) are Second Team honorees; and outfielder Anna Willis '10 (Gorham, ME) has been voted to the Third Team.

For van der Linden, the All-Conference honor is the first of her outstanding career. In 2010, the senior shortstop hit .346 (44-127) with 33 runs, eight doubles, a career-high, and single-season record 11 home runs, and 37 RBI. In her career, she started all 159 of the team's games at the most demanding infield position, shortstop, and caps her four years with a .343 (170-495) batting average, 107 runs, 36 doubles, 15 home runs and 121 RBI.

Dunn, a 2009 Third Team All-GNAC selection, hit .369 (41-111) with 19 runs, 10 doubles, five home runs, and 30 RBI in 2010. She ranked second on the team in batting average and doubles and third in home runs and RBI as a junior.

Leverone, a two-time First Team All-GNAC choice, followed up her breakout rookie season with an outstanding sophomore campaign, as the outfielder led the team in batting average (.450), hits (58), runs (40), doubles (14), RBI (60), slugging (.775) and on-base percentage (.472) in 2010. She belted eight home runs this spring and already owns the SJC program record for long balls (16) in just two seasons as a Monk.

Kluna emerged as the Monks' top hurler in 2010, as the sophomore led the staff in ERA (1.79), appearances (17), strikeouts (63), opponent's batting average (.246) and fewest walks (8). She posted an 8-4 record in the circle and notched a pair of saves in 78.1 innings in 2010.

Shufelt enjoyed a spectacular freshman season, hitting .368 (46-125) with 33 runs, 11 RBI and eight stolen bases in eight attempts in 2010. The speedy outfielder was named GNAC Rookie of the Week on March 30th and earned a pair of GNAC Honor Roll bids during her first season.

Willis earns her first All-GNAC honor as a softball player after hitting .339 (43-127) with 37 runs, 10 RBI and 12 steals in 12 attempts in 2010. She played in all 159 of the team's games in her career, with 157 starts, and scored 125 runs with a .333 (164-492) batting average and 35 steals in her four years.

Also, Cynthia Wescott '12 (Westbrook, ME) has been selected as the team's GNAC All-Sportsmanship Team representative.
