Dunn Earns Regional Academic Accolade

STANDISH, ME – For the second consecutive year, Saint Joseph's College junior first baseman Alyssa Dunn (Standish, ME/Bonny Eagle) has received ESPN The Magazine Softball All-Academic District 1 honors.

Dunn, a Third Team All-Academic honoree as a sophomore, receives Second Team honors this year after a vote by members of the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA). District 1 includes colleges and universities in New York and New England.

A Biology/Pre-Med major, Dunn has excelled both in the classroom and between the lines. She has been named All-GNAC twice in her career, including a First Team nomination this spring, and has been named to the GNAC All-Tournament Team in each of the last two seasons for the Monks.

Also an outstanding field hockey player, Dunn has received a pair of National Field Hockey Coaches Association (NFHCA) All-Academic honors and was named to the North Atlantic Conference All-Academic squad last fall. She garnered Second Team All-NAC honors as a sophomore and was named to the NAC All-Tournament Team as a junior.

Dunn enjoyed a fantastic season for the softball team this spring, as the first baseman hit .369 (41-111) with 19 runs, 30 RBI, 10 doubles, five home runs and a .613 slugging percentage. A fine defender, Dunn made just three errors in 280 chances and paced the Monks with a .993 fielding percentage this season. She played an important role for a St. Joe's club that went 30-10 overall, posted a 21-3 record in GNAC play and won 23 consecutive games, a new team record, during the 2010 campaign.

Dunn is one of just three GNAC Softball players to receive the academic honor. Monica White of Rivier and Christina Naramore from Emerson both were listed on the Second Team as well. Only one other player from a Maine institution was honored, as Brittany Tasi of Colby College earned Third Team recognition.

The College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSida) selects Academic All America teams in 12 programs: football, women's volleyball, men's soccer, women's soccer, men's basketball, women's basketball, baseball, softball, men's track & field/cross country, women's track & field/cross country, men's at large and women's at large. A first team, second team and third team are selected in both the University (Division I and I-AA) and College (Division II, III and NAIA) Divisions.

To be eligible for nomination by a CoSIDA member at their institution, the player must be a starter or important reserve with a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.30 at his/her present institution, participate in at least 50 percent of the team's games, and have completed one full calendar year at his/her current institution and has reached sophomore athletic eligibility.
