Saint Joseph's Falls to Wheaton (Ill.), Topples Elms College

FORT MYERS, FL – Saint Joseph's (5-1) landed on both sides of the mercy rule on Tuesday afternoon, dropping an 11-3 decision to Wheaton College (Ill.) before routing Elms College (0-1), 10-2, later in the day.

The Monks committed seven infield errors, miscues that resulted in nine unearned runs for unlucky starter Kayla Vannah (Waldoboro, Maine), who allowed 10 runs – one earned – off six hits and a pair of walks over five frames to take the loss. Making her first NCAA appearance, freshman hurler Erica Boulanger (Somersworth, N.H.) allowed one run in a hitless sixth inning.

Offensively, junior shortstop Lindsay Moore (Barrington, N.H.) was 3-3 with a run scored and freshman first baseman Melissa Mayhew (Hiram, Maine) doubled and drove in two runs in the Monks' first loss of the season.

In the nightcap, Elms struck first with the help of yet another SJC error in the top of the opening frame, but Saint Joseph's responded in a big way with seven runs off five hits and a pair of Blazers' miscues in the bottom of the first to assume control of the contest.

During the seven-run first, junior left fielder Theresa Hendrix (Scarborough, Maine/Cheverus) belted a three-run triple and freshman designated player Megen Pollini (Wolfeboro, N.H.) plated a pair with her first NCAA hit – a single to center field.

In the bottom of the fifth, Pollini scored on an Alyssa Wade (Peru, Maine) single to make it an 8-2 game. In the sixth, senior Danielle Leavitt (Spruce Head, Maine) drove in sophomore third baseman Kim Jordan (Bangor, Maine) with a fielder's choice and later scored on another single by Wade to lift the Monks to a mercy-rule-shortened triumph.

Pollini put forth a fine effort in her first college start, going 3-4 with a run, a double and a pair of RBI and senior center fielder Danyelle Shufelt (Sutton, Vt.) went 3-4 with a run scored in the lopsided win. Wade was 2-2 with two RBI, Mayhew went 2-3 with a run and freshman Marissa Hernandez (Goshen, N.Y.) notched her first collegiate hit when she pinch hit for Shufelt in the bottom of the sixth and doubled down the left field line.

Sophomore pitcher Laura Jordan (Orrington, Maine) collected the second victory of her career after yielding two unearned runs off three hits and four walks with three K's in six innings.

Saint Joseph's is off on Wednesday and resumes play on Thursday with games versus Albright College (9:00 AM) and Bethany Lutheran College (11:00 AM).
