Eagles Sweep Monks, 3-0 & 3-1

STANDISH, ME - Husson University (31-10-1, 15-1 NAC) swept a non-conference doubleheader with Saint Joseph's College (33-11, 18-6 GNAC) at Bailey Field on Sunday afternoon. The Eagles took the opener by a 3-0 margin and closed out the sweep with a 3-1 triumph in the nightcap.

Offense was in short supply for the Monks as the hosts mustered just one run off eight hits in the pair of setbacks. Eagles' junior starter Amanda Ryan (Brewer, Maine) was dominant in the opener, holding Saint Joseph's to only two hits with six strikeouts over seven shutout innings, while Husson hurlers Becca McCarty (Skowhegan, Maine), Kayla Merrill (Bethel, Maine) and Deb Colpitts (Levant, Maine) combined to allow one run off six hits with nine K's to help the visitors win their seventh-consecutive contest.

The Monks' pitching staff entered the opener having not yielded an earned run in the past 48 innings, but the impressive streak would end after 53.2 frames as the Eagles broke a scoreless deadlock with a run off two hits with two out in the top of the sixth. Senior right fielder Courtney Hil (Calais, Maine) led off the inning with a bunt single and later scored on a Colpitts single to right field.

Husson proceeded to tack on a pair of runs off two hits and an SJC miscue in the top of the seventh, when Lona Sargent (Sullivan, Maine) and Aimee Mortensen (Biddeford, Maine) rapped RBI base knocks.

Junior shortstop Lindsay Moore (Barrington, N.H.) recorded a bunt single in the first inning and senior catcher Heather Tripp (Lovell, Maine) slapped a single up the midde in the seventh - the Monks had just one baserunner in between the two hits and did not advance a runner into scoring position in the 3-0 loss.

Junior Rae-Marie Copan (Newton, Mass.) started for the hosts and allowed two hits while fanning a pair in three scoreless innings. Freshman pitcher Erica Boulanger (Somersworth, N.H.) took the loss after yielding three runs (one earned) off six hits and two walks with three K's over 3.2 innings and junior Theresa Hendrix (Scarborough, Maine/Cheverus) finished the pitching line for the Monks by retiring the only batter she faced in the seventh.

For Husson, Sargent and Hill recorded two hits apiece and Colpitts went 3-4 with a double and an RBI in the opener.

The closing contest began in a promising manner for Saint Joseph's, as the Royal Blue had the bases loaded with one out and the power-hitting Hendrix at the plate. But on a day where nothing seemed to break for the hosts, this scenario proved to be no different as Hendrix swung through a pitch for strike three and Husson catcher Heidi Shaw (Manchester, Maine) picked off Danyelle Shufelt (Sutton, Vt.), who was taking a large secondary lead, at third base to cancel the threat.

Shaw went on to score the game's first run when she reached via error and scored on a Breanna Martin (Oxford, Maine) single in the top of the third.

The Eagles extended their lead to 3-0 in the fifth when Allie Hill (Calais, Maine) scored on an error and Courtney Hill touched the plate on a Mortensen single.

The Monks finally broke through with their first run of the day in the bottom of the sixth inning. With two out, Moore roped a double to right-center and promptly scored when the following batter - Tripp - lined a single to right field.

Saint Joseph's seemed to have something going in the bottom of the seventh. Senior Kirin Schrum (Littleton, N.H.) doubled and Danielle Leavitt (Spruce Head, Maine) singled to provide the hosts with runners on first and third with nobody out, but Merrill closed the door by fanning Victoria Ramos (North Scituate, R.I.) and Marissa Hernandez (Goshen, N.Y.) and inducing a Shufelt infield pop-up.

Moore, 2-3 with a double and a run scored, was the only repeat-hitter for either club in the nightcap. Senior pitcher Kayla Vannah (Waldoboro, Maine) took the loss after giving up an unearned run off two hits over three frames and sophomore Laura Jordan (Orrington, Maine) allowed two unearned runs off four hits in four effective innings of relief.

With a single up the middle in the bottom of the first, Shufelt tied the program's single-season hits record and now has 75 knocks on the year, the same total former teammate Emily Leverone '12 registered in 2009.

McCarty improved to 12-5 on the season after scattering a pair of hits with four K's in three innings and Merrill earned her first save of the season with three innings of one-hit, four-strikeout relief. Colpitts surrendered a run off three hits in one inning for the visitors.

With the results, Saint Joseph's falls to 36-5 since the start of the 1990 campaign versus Husson University. Prior to this afternoon, the Monks owned a 13-game winning streak against the Eagles, a string that began in 2001.

Both teams will learn of their NCAA Tournament seedings and destinations tomorrow morning. NCAA Regional play begins on Thursday.
