STANDISH, Maine – Saint Joseph's College (11-12) swept a non-conference softball doubleheader with UMaine-Farmington (1-13) at Richard W. Bailey Field on Wednesday afternoon.
SAINT JOSEPH'S 15, UMF 1:
The Monks claimed a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first when senior Olivia Howe (Arundel, Maine) doubled and scored on a Sylvia Foley (Scarborough, Maine) base hit. The hosts put the game out of reach in the bottom of the second, when the SJC bats exploded for 11 runs on seven hits and three UMF errors. Freshman catcher Sadie Tirrell (Naples, Maine) roped a two-run triple and freshman shortstop Charlotte Cloutier (Lewiston, Maine) posted a pair of hits and knocked in three runs during the dominant frame.
IN THE CIRCLE:
Senior starter Meredith Pence (Remington, Va.) picked up the win after tossing three no-hit innings with two walks and four strikeouts while senior Emily Eagleston (Reading, Mass.) allowed an unearned run on three hits and a walk with one punchout in two innings of relief.
UMF starter Carleigh Schievink (Charlestown, Mass.) took the loss after giving up seven runs (five earned) on seven hits in 1.1 innings and Brianna Benson (Woodstock, Maine) yielded eight runs (two earned) off eight hits and a pair of walks in 2.2 frames of relief duty.
AT THE BAT:
- Tirrell was 2-3 with a run, a triple, and three RBI
- Cloutier went 2-4 with two runs and three RBI
- Freshman Hannah Gosselin (Biddeford, Maine) was 1-2 with three runs, a double, and two RBI
- Howe and Lydia Goodnough (Kennebunkport, Maine) notched two hits apiece
SAINT JOSEPH'S 7, UMF 4:
The Monks kicked off game two by scoring five runs off five hits and a UMF miscue in the bottom of the first inning, when Howe notched an RBI double and Eagleston drilled a run-scoring triple off the left field fence.
St. Joe's tacked on a pair of runs in the second, when Howe delivered a sacrifice fly and Foley was credited with an RBI after reaching on an infield error.
The Beavers went on to score four runs on just one hit in the top of the fifth, when Schievink walked and sprinted home on an infield error and Maddie Pike (Kennebunk, Maine) blasted a three-run double.
IN THE CIRCLE:
SJC starter Sydney Hatch (Newburgh, Maine) earned the victory after working four one-hit innings while walking two and fanning five batters. Freshman Mia Northrup (Whitefield, Maine) earned the first save of her career after allowing four unearned runs on one hit and two walks with five K's in three innings.
UMF starter Grace Martin (Marblehead, Mass.) was hit with the loss after giving up seven runs (five earned) on seven knocks in one inning of work and Schievink tossed five scoreless frames while giving up two hits and striking out a pair.
AT THE BAT:
- Gosselin went 3-4 with two runs and a stolen base
- Howe was 2-2 with a run, a double, and two RBI
- For UMF, Pike was 1-3 with a double and three RBI
