Saint Joseph’s Topples UMaine-Farmington, 20-2

STANDISH, Maine – Saint Joseph's College (4-0) defeated UMaine-Farmington (0-3), 20-2, in non-conference women's lacrosse action at the SJC Athletics Complex on Thursday evening.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

Grad student Lydia Dexter (Oakland, Maine) lifted the Monks to an early lead with a pair of goals in the first two-and-a-half minutes and the hosts held a 6-0 lead after sophomore Cailyn Wesley (Peabody, Mass.) scored twice in a matter of two minutes later in the opening quarter.

The Beavers finally found the scoreboard at the 2:07 mark, when sophomore Madisyn Smith (Farmingdale, Maine) scored off a Jade Petrie (Wells, Maine) assist to make it a 6-1 game. St. Joe's proceeded to net 10 unanswered goals as a Shauna Clark (Oakland, Maine) tally lifted SJC to a 16-1 cushion with 9:17 left in the third period.

UMaine-Farmington freshman Abby Trefsger (South Portland, Maine) ended the Monks' scoring run when she found the back of the net on a free-position attempt with 5:39 remaining in the third quarter.

The Monks closed out the game with two additional third-quarter markers and a pair of goals in the fourth frame to account for the 20-2 final.

TEAM STATS:

Saint Joseph's held sizeable advantages in shots (47-6), shots on goal (33-5), ground balls (28-21) and draw controls (19-6) in the victory.

THE KEEPERS:

SJC starter Jenna Schutt earned the win after allowing a goal in the first half while first-year Morgan Wright posted three saves, three ground balls, and three caused turnovers in the second half.

UMF freshman netminder Maddy TenKat (Dryden, N.Y.) made 13 saves and picked up six ground balls for the visitors.

LEADERS – SAINT JOSEPH'S:

  • Dexter led the Monks with five goals and two assists and added five draw controls
  • Sophomore Carson Battaglia (Gorham, Maine) tallied three goals and an assist with six draw controls, three ground balls, and a pair of caused turnovers
  • Sophomore Bridget Collins (Milford, Conn.) scored two goals and dealt a pair of assists
  • Wesley added two goals, an assist, and three ground balls
  • First-year Brianna Paul (Brattleboro, Vt.) potted three goals with two ground balls
  • Clark contributed two goals and four draw controls
  • Freshman Mackenzie Siebert (Naples, Maine) notched two goals and four draw controls

LEADERS – UMAINE-FARMINGTON:

  • Trefsger scored a goal with five draw controls and two ground balls
  • Smith recorded a goal and Petrie posted an assist with four ground balls and two caused turnovers
  • Junior Emily Stinson (Alfred, Maine) notched three caused turnovers

HISTORICALLY SPEAKING:

With the victory, Saint Joseph's improves to 8-1 all-time versus UMaine-Farmington and has now defeated the Beavers in eight-consecutive meetings dating back to the 2009 season.
