STANDISH, ME - Saint Joseph's (6-4, 5-2 GNAC) defeated Emerson
College (6-4-1, 4-3 GNAC), 2-0, in a key conference matchup on
Wednesday afternoon at Westerlea Way Field. Anna
Willis ‘10 (Gorham, ME) and
Mikayla Call ‘11 (Portland,
ME/McAuley HS) notched goals in the second half for the Royal Blue
and goalkeeper Katye Mayo
‘10 (Fairfield, ME) made five stops in net to record her
third shutout of the season.
In a scoreless opening stanza, St. Joe's recorded 10 shots without
beating Emerson keeper Baileigh Wirzburger ‘12 (New Bedford,
MA). Sophomore Whitney Linindoll
(Paris, ME) had the best opportunity to put the Lady Monks on the
board late in the half when she blasted a ball off the crossbar in
the 41st minute.
Willis scored what would end up being the
game-winner, her fourth goal of the season, seven minutes into the
second half on a breakaway that was set up by a
Brianna Jordan ‘10
(Scarborough, ME) pass.
Call netted her team-leading ninth goal of the
season fourteen minutes later to extend the SJC lead to 2-0.
Streaking down the right side, the sophomore forward received a
pass from Katie Jordan ‘09
(Sandwich, MA) and booted the ball between Wirzburger and the right
post to cap the game scoring with 23:08 remaining.
The Lions wasted a scoring opportunity in the 79th minute when
Mayo exited the net to dive for a loose ball in
front of Rachel Lerma ‘10 (Irvine, CA) and Lindsay D'Andrea
‘11 (Medford, NJ). D'Andrea wound up with the ball and had a
free shot at an open net but, unfortunately for the Lions, kicked
the ball into the left side of the net to negate a potential
momentum builder with 11 minutes to play.
Mikayla Call paced both teams
with 10 shots. For Emerson, D'Andrea led the way with four shots
while Kendra Davidson 10 (Newport Beach, CA) recorded three shots
in the losing effort.
Wirzburger made seven stops in net for the visiting Lions. St.
Joe's doubled up Emerson in shots, 18-9, and held a 4-3 edge in
corner kicks.
Saint Joseph's will travel to Providence, RI on Saturday October
11th to face off against Johnson & Wales University (6-6, 3-3
GNAC) in 1:00 PM contest. Emerson will travel to Northfield, VT on
Saturday to square off against first-place Norwich University (9-2,
6-0 GNAC) at 1:00 PM.
