East Providence, RI -Johnson & Wales (7-6-1, 4-3-1 GNAC)
battled Saint Joseph's (6-4-1, 5-2-1) to a 3-3 tie in Great
Northeast Athletic Conference women's soccer action at Pierce
Stadium on Saturday afternoon.
Johnson & Wales struck first when freshman Katlyn Gerrish
(North Stonington, CT) collected a rebounded shot in the box and
put the ball into the lower right hand corner of the net to give
the Wildcats the 1-0 lead just 6:06 into the contest.
Saint Joseph's would tie the game at the 18:34 mark when sophomore
Jessica Needham (East
Bridgewater, MA) fed a pass to senior Katie
Jordan (Sandwich, MA) who buried a shot from 10
yards out to knot the game at 1-1. The visiting Monks would take
the 2-1 lead on sophomore Mikayla
Call's (Portland, ME) unassisted goal at the 30:17
mark.
The Wildcats responded at 38:33, again on a rebounded shot, when
freshman Amanda Aguiar (Fall River, MA) scored to make the game
even at 2-2. The two teams would head to halftime tied with two
goals apiece.
The two teams went back and forth through the first part of the
second half before Johnson & Wales would take the lead after
junior Angela Cazzato (Rensselear, NY) tossed a throw-in to
freshman Samantha Reynolds (Plymouth, MA). Reynolds then put in a
shot from 25 yards out to give the Wildcats the 3-2 lead at the
69:32 mark.
Saint Joseph's tied the game 3-3 at the 75:16 mark when junior
Brianna Jordan (Scarborough, MA)
lofted a shot from 40 yards out that went over the JWU keeper's
head. Regulation would end with the match deadlocked at 3-3.
Both teams would have their chances in the two 10-minute overtime
periods. Neither could capitalize, however, as they settled for the
tie.
Sophomore Kory Blythe (Fall River, MA) had 10 saves for Johnson
& Wales while junior Katye
Mayo (Fairfield, ME) made four stops for Saint
Joseph's of Maine.
The Wildcats will return to action on Wednesday, October 15th when
they travel to Simmons for a GNAC contest, starting at 7:00 PM. St.
Joe's will host Albertus Magnus College in conference action on
Monday, October 13th at 1:00 PM.
