St. Joe's Tops Simmons College, 4-1

STANDISH, ME - Saint Joseph's (12-4-1, 9-2-1 GNAC) capped their 2008 conference schedule with a 4-1 victory over Simmons College (6-11-1, 5-7) at Westerlea Way Field on Sunday afternoon. Jessica Needham '11 (E. Bridgewater, MA) tallied a goal and two assists in the league victory. St. Joe's is currently riding a nine-game unbeaten streak.

With the victory, Saint Joseph's secured the #2 seed in the GNAC playoffs for the second straight year. The conference will announce the complete tournament schedule early this week.

After 30:35 of scoreless play, Mikayla Call '11 (Portland, ME/McAuley) notched her team-leading 14th goal of the year to provide the home team with a 1-0 lead. The play was a result of Call beating Simmons keeper Rachel Elliott '10 (Amherst, NH) to a loose ball and ended with a score to the right corner of the net. Needham collected an assist on the marker.

Needham dealt her second assist of the day on Katie Jordan's '09 (Sandwich, ME) ninth tally of the year at the 49:25 mark and netted a goal, her eighth of the fall, 15 minutes later to extend the SJC lead to 3-0. Whitney Linindoll '10 (Paris, ME) was credited with an assist on the play.

Simmons got on the board in the 80th minute when Anya Bottaro '11 (Winchester, MA) solved Lady Monks' goalkeeper Katye Mayo '10 (Fairfield, ME), who had not allowed a goal in her last 487 minutes of play, to cut the SJC lead to 3-1. Natalie Stever '11 (Chagrin, Falls, OH) dished out an assist on the Sharks' lone score of the contest.

The two-goal lead was short-lived, however, as Brianna Jordan '10 (Scarborough, ME) netted a goal just 50 seconds later off a Lauren Harrigan '10 (Caribou, ME) pass to lift the Lady Monks to a 4-1 lead and complete the game scoring.

For the Lady Monks, Needham led the way with six shots and Call, Harrigan and Bri Jordan all had four shots in the triumph.

For the Sharks, Elliott made eight saves in 71:43 minutes and Ashley Wheeler '12 (Nashua, NH) made four saves in 18:17 of relief duty.

Saint Joseph's outshot Simmons, 23-9, and held a 3-1 advantage in corner kicks in the contest.

The Lady Monks will travel to Gorham, ME on Wednesday, October 29th to face off against Southern Maine at 3:00 PM in the team's regular season finale.
