Monks Nip Huskies in OT, 1-0

GORHAM, Maine -- Senior Katie Jordan (Sandwich, Mass.) scored the only goal 2:56 into the first sudden death overtime period to give St. Joseph's College a 1-0 victory over the University of Southern Maine Wednesday afternoon in a non-conference women's soccer match at the USM Soccer Field.

The victory extends the Monks winning streak to seven, and runs their unbeaten string to 10 matches (9-0-1). The Monks will head into their conference tournament with a record of 13-4-1. The Huskies lost their fourth straight match to fall to 4-11-1 with one regular season match remaining.

St. Joseph's was awarded a free kick along the left wing touch line about 25 yards out after a foul. Junior Brianna Jordan (Scarborough, Maine) served a cross to the back post where Katie Jordan headed it by USM junior goalkeeper Alison Bradley (Auckland, New Zealand) for the game winner. The goal was her 10th of the season.

Playing on a slippery field in cold, windy conditions, both teams missed excellent scoring opportunities during regulation time. St. Joe's sophomore Mikayla Call (Portland, Maine) hit a shot over the crossbar from 10 yards out early in the first half, and sophomore Jessica Needham (East Bridgewater, Mass.) had a cross paint the crossbar early in the second half. USM senior Caitlin Brown (Camden, Maine) hit the crossbar from about eight yards out with less than five minutes remaining in regulation.

Junior goalkeeper Katye Mayo (Fairfield, Maine) made three saves for the Lady Monks to record her ninth shutout of the season. Bradley registered four saves. Saint Joseph's had an 8-5 edge in shots, and both sides had three corner kicks.

Southern Maine heads to Providence, R.I., on Saturday (1:00 p.m.) to play Little East Conference foe Rhode Island College. Saint Joseph's begins play in the Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) tournament on Sunday (12:00 p.m.) hosting Johnson and Wales University in a first round game.
