Fitzgerald Named GNAC Defensive Player of the Year
STANDISH, ME - The Great Northeast Athletic Conference has announced the 2009 Women's Soccer All-Conference Teams. Five Saint Joseph's College players have been recognized for their performance during the regular season.
Shannon Fitzgerald '12 (Amesbury, MA), the 2009 GNAC Defensive Player of the Year, and Mikayla Call '11 (Portland, ME/McAuley) have garnered First Team honors, while Brianna Jordan '10 (Scarborough, ME) was voted to the Second Team and Jessica Needham '11 (East Bridgewater, MA) and Anna Willis '10 (Gorham, ME) are listed on the Third Team. Willis also received recognition as the Monks' Sportsmanship Team recipient.
Fitzgerald, the anchor of a talented SJC backline, started all 20 games for the 12-6-2 Monks this fall. St. Joe's ranked sixth in the conference in both goals allowed and goals against average with Fitzgerald roaming on the defensive end. The postseason accolades are the first of this talented sophomore's career.
Call receives her third consecutive First Team honor after tallying 5 goals and 8 assists for 18 total points during the 2009 campaign. Her assists total led the Monks, ranked third in the conference and counts as a career high.
Jordan collects Second Team honors for the second straight season after netting 6 goals, 2 assists and 14 points in 16 games. She ranked second on the team in goals, as well as game-winning goals with three, and also was third on the side in total points as a senior.
All Conference Third Team honoree Jessica Needham led the Monks with 11 goals, 4 game-clinchers, and 27 points and tied for second on the side with 5 assists as a junior.
Willis, an All-Conference Second Team selection last fall, garners Third Team honors after netting 3 goals, 5 assists and 11 points this season. Via team vote, the fleet-afoot senior collected GNAC Sportsmanship honors as well.
