2009 Women's Soccer Team Awards Announced

STANDISH, ME - Saint Joseph's Women's Soccer Head Coach Michael Bolanz '00 has announced his 2009 team awards. Most Valuable Player, Rookie of the Year, Unsung Hero, Impact Player, Most Improved and "Golden Boot" awards were presented to deserving team members.

The Most Valuable Player honor has been awarded to junior forward Mikayla Call (Portland, ME/McAuley). Call, set to be a team co-captain in the fall of 2010, led the team with 8 assists was second on the side with 18 total points. A three-time All-GNAC First Team honoree, Call is poised to challenge some of the most coveted program career records during her senior campaign.

First-year players Jennifer Keaney(Scituate, MA) and Casey Monaghan (Portland, ME) share the team's Rookie of the Year honor. Keaneytallied 4 goals and 9 points with a pair of game-winners in her first collegiate season and Monaghanmade 16 starts as a key member of the Monks' backline in 2009.

The team's Unsung Hero award goes to senior goalkeeper Katye Mayo(Fairfield, ME), who posted a 1.43 goals-against average with a .741 save percentage and four shutouts between the pipes for the Monks in 2009. She closes out her esteemed career ranking in the top five in most career netminder categories, including games (60, 3rd), minutes (5343, 3rd), saves (229, 3rd), wins (40, 3rd) and shutouts (20, 3rd).

Shannon Fitzgerald'12 (Amesbury, MA) is the 2009 "Impact Player" award recipient. This honor goes to the player who consistently makes the biggest impact on the field and provides the team with intangibles that may not show in the box score. Fitzgeraldwas honored following the season with an All-GNAC First Team nomination and was also named as the conference Defensive Player of the year.

Sophomore defender Katelyn Call (Portland, ME/McAuley) is the 2009 Most Improved Player. Call played in 8 games for the Monks last fall and could be a key contributor in the future with continued development.

Jessica Needham '11 (East Bridgewater, MA) is the 2009 "Golden Boot" award winner. Given annually to the Monks' leading goal scorer, Needhamnetted the honor after tallying a career-high 11 markers, including four game-winning goals, during her junior campaign.

Saint Joseph's closed out the 2009 season with a 12-6-2 overall record and played to a 9-1-2 tilt in GNAC play en route to earning the program's first #1 seed in the GNAC Tournament. The Monks' season came to a premature end, however, as #5 Simmons College nipped the Royal Blue, 1-0, in a conference semifinal matchup on November 4th.
