Monks Coast Past Blue Jays, 3-0

STANDISH, ME - Saint Joseph's (3-1-1, 3-0-1 GNAC) defeated Saint Joseph (CT), 3-0, in GNAC women's soccer action at Westerlea Way Field on Saturday afternoon. Brianna Jordan '10 (Scarborough, ME) notched her second two-goal performance of the young season and SJC goalkeeper Katye Mayo '10 (Fairfield, ME) posted her second consecutive shutout in the victory.

The Monks outshot the Blue Jays, 8-2, and Saint Joseph (CT) keeper Cait Witham '10 (Prospect, CT) made three saves in the loss.

Anna Willis '10 (Gorham, ME) helped jumpstart the action with a perfect pass to Jordan, who was sprinting up the middle of the field. Mikayla Call '11 (Portland, ME/McAuley) was also in the vicinity and helped the play develop by feinting an effort to collect the pass, which allowed Jordan to attack the net undefended. The senior midfielder proceeded to place the ball in the left corner past Witham for her third goal of the season.

Jordan struck again eight minutes later to provide the hosts with a 2-0 advantage. Jessica Needham '11 (E. Bridgewater, MA) managed to find Jordan , who held position near the five-yard line, with a pass and the senior finished the play with a kick to the left corner of the net.

The two-goal lead held until the 60 th minute when Willis added her first goal of the 2009 campaign. Call dribbled the ball on the right side and found the speedy Willis in the middle of the field near the 18-yard line. The Gorham native went on to beat Witham with a kick to the right corner and cap the game scoring with her Monks firmly in the lead, 3-0.

In an effort to increase breast cancer awareness, the St. Joe's players donned pink jersey tops and several team members asked for donations from the crowd during the half to help support the cause. The Monks will wear the pink jerseys in three more home games: versus Rivier (Oct. 3), Norwich (Oct. 10) and Johnson & Wales (Oct. 17), with all matches set to begin at 1:00 PM. Thanks to the many fans who showed their support this afternoon!
