St. Joe’s Tops Mount Ida, 3-1

STANDISH, ME – Saint Joseph's (6-2, 4-2 GNAC) topped Mount Ida College (1-6-1, 0-5 GNAC), 3-1, in a rainy GNAC Women's Soccer contest at Westerlea Way Field on Tuesday afternoon. Mikayla Call '11 (Portland, ME/McAuley) produced a goal and an assist in the SJC victory.

Elizabeth Theberge '11 (Danvers, MA) opened the game scoring with her first goal of the season in the ninth minute of play. Lauren Chouinard '14 (Gorham, ME) pushed the ball to Theberge at the top of the box and beat Mustangs keeper Meghan Begins '11 (Jericho, VT) with a blast to the top left corner.

Although the Monks outshot the Mustangs by a 7-0 margin in the opening period, neither team was able muster real scoring opportunities for the remainder of the first half.  Due to wet playing conditions, at least partially, much of the game-play took place in the midfield.

The 1-0 lead held until midway through the second half when the Royal Blue scored two goals in just under two minutes. With a strike past Begins from the top of the box, Call doubled the St. Joe's advantage with her sixth goal of the season at the 65:36 mark. Emily Cocciardi '14 (Middletown, MA) was credited with an assist on the play.

The Monks' cushion was extended to 3-0 just 105 seconds later when Jennifer Keaney '13 (Scituate, MA) found the back of the net on a breakaway, with Call collecting an assist.

With just 11 seconds on the clock, Heather Harrington '13 (Bedford, NH) spoiled the SJC shutout bid with a penalty-kick goal to make the final score 3-1, Monks.

Saint Joseph's keeper Jaci Lorenzen '14 (Windham, ME) made three saves, while Begins came up with seven stops for the Mustangs.

Call now has 40 career goals, which is the third-most in St. Joe's Women's Soccer history. She also ranks third in points (104) and assists (24) and is tied for second with eight game-winning goals.

Saint Joseph's held an advantage in shots (19-4) and corner kicks (7-1) in the victory and improves to 4-0 in the history of the matchup against the Mustangs.

Saint Joseph's will play at Rivier College on Saturday at 3:00 PM, while Mount Ida returns to action with a non-conference game at home against Becker College on Wednesday at 4:00 PM.
