Raiders Sink Monks in Overtime, 1-0

NASHUA, NH – Kaitlyn Souza (Wilmington, MA) scored 6:34 into overtime to break a scoreless deadlock and lift Rivier College (6-4-1, 2-2-1 GNAC) past Saint Joseph's (6-3, 4-3 GNAC), 1-0, in GNAC Women's Soccer action on Saturday afternoon. Monks netminder Jaci Lorenzen '14 (Windham, ME) made three saves in the loss.

St. Joe's dominated for the majority of play and held advantages in shots (11-9) and corner kicks (10-3), but wasn't able to solve Raiders keeper Christine Surber (Langdon, NH), who notched seven stops for the hosts.

Rivier outshot the Monks in the first half 6-3, with one attempt finding the crossbar, but that's as close as the Raiders would come in the opening stanza.

The Monks played most of the second half in the Raider zone, rifling off seven total shots and forcing Surber to make three acrobatic stops, including a diving save to her left and another where she punched the ball over the crossbar.

St. Joe's kept the ball in the Rivier zone for the first five minutes of the overtime period. The first scoring opportunity, by Monks freshman Ashley Beaulieu (Durham, ME) at the 92:23 mark, was turned away by Surber.

Rebecca Wickens (Tyngsboro, MA) registered the Raiders' first opportunity in extra play with Lorenzen making the stop, but the SJC keeper's bid to clear the ball was unsuccessful, as Morgan Greene (Acworth, NH) controlled the kick. She dribbled the ball towards the offensive end and lofted the ball over the St. Joe's defenders, where Souza won a footrace for the loose ball, dribbled three times and chipped the ball past Lorenzen to the right side of the net for the winner.

For Rivier, the win over the Monks is the first in the history of the matchup between the GNAC rivals. St. Joe's is now 3-1 against the Raiders.

Both teams will face GNAC opponents in their next contests. St. Joe's will play at Johnson & Wales Wednesday at 4:00 PM, while Rivier will host St. Joseph (CT) tomorrow at 1:00 PM.
